My Bishop just talked with me in front of his house (next door to mine). Based on the conversation, I’m pretty sure I am going to be asked to teach the oldest youth class in Sunday School. What I wanted to share is what he said as we talked about the youth:
1) They need to have their conventional understandings challenged.
2) They need someone who can take them deeper than where they already are, and too many of our adults still are at too shallow a level of doctrinal understanding to do that.
3) There’s a difference between flying a plane and being a pilot. Primary teaches our kids how to fly a plane by following instructions; our youth need to learn to be pilots.
This is a TBM Bishop in pretty much every aspect of his life – a former military commander who is as orthodox as it gets in most ways imaginable.
I will excerpt the above thoughts in a public post soon, but I just thought I’d share this with you before it’s official on Sunday.
You are just what they need. And your bishop is wise. Very cool Ray! I couldn’t agree more. What a fantastic place to serve. It’s nice to hear this sinking in at local leadership levels among traditional folks. It feels to me like progress towards making things better for the Church. Cool! :thumbup: I can only wish for my kids to have such a teacher at a key point in their lives. While they will get challenging ideas from me, it would be nice for them to be prodded from multiple directions.Thanks, everyone. I’m really excited about this chance.
