I like phpBB. I also actually like that you have not got around to customizing your installation. I prefer not to have the forum screaming “STAY LDS!!!!” at the top of its lungs or having a prominent image. A small, discrete logo would be okay. POLL!
Check all the options you like.
There’s totally no problem with kicking around preferences and ideas about the design of this forum. We have almost zero professional IT support though. Three of us have board admin access. None of us have server-level access. None of us (that I know) have expertise in phpBB adiminstration. We took over the day-to-day task of developing the practical concept of “StayLDS,” but the domain and server still belong to John D (who is out of the loop). There are limits to how much we can change. And as some may have noticed, how fast we can fix problems when the board malfunctions. I am generally afraid to tinker too much with the mechanics and appearance. I’m not always sure that I won’t making things explode.
As a recovering web master, I feel your pain. I say, leave it all alone even if somebody offers to fix it. 
This site is one of the last projects John started right before he made the decision to adjust his life. It was sort of a shell left to anyone who had energy, who wanted to do something with it. I am really happy with the slow, steady progress. There are some super-cool people here now. My hope and prayer is that over time, people are drawn by the Spirit to come here, people who have a need and something to share.
