GuestWow! I can’t believe all the great responses I have received. Thanks again! I have a great deal to think about. I know my anger and how I express it are completely my problem. It’s based on my own neurosis. I want to apologize if the term “persecute” upset anyone. It’s one of the terms my cousin has thrown at me to describe his feelings towards the LDS church. I’m the only member in my family and some family gatherings like Thanksgiving get a bit hairy. Part of me understands why he uses this term. People are donating time and money so he and 10 percent of our population can’t have the same civil rights. I ask myself, why do I even care? I’m not gay. That sounds pretty selfish. Isn’t that the more important question for me?
I want to thank people for warning me that this site could shake someones testimony. However, I think every person should read both sides of the story. Making a decision about what you believe when you don’t know all the facts seems strange to me. IMHO, anytime someones tells you not to read something, you should go read it!
Sorry if I got off base! I am really touched by all the responses. I keep going over them trying to decide my strategy. Also, I hope I didn’t make anyone mad. This has been an amazingly cathartic experience for me!

GuestSome people think all of us are “mad” – but we very seldom get mad. 😆 October 12, 2012 at 7:06 am #260650Anonymous

Politics shmolitics. Church doesn’t need to include those views…but as GB said, if you never say anything, others think it is OK or assumed everyone else things GOP.It bothers me when I hear strong statements by zealous people in our ward against Obama…but I know the small crowd of democrats…and I always find them and chuckle with them in the hallways. It helps me remember it isn’t 99.99% of the ward…it is fewer than it seems, and I don’t need to think the squeeky wheels are the most important.
This could be something about your church experience Heavenly Father wants you to grow from. How to love others who play the different instrument in the orchestra, and how to make your instrument heard.
[and yes…the Star Wars quotes ring true…]

GuestLots of us feel disaffected at church in the current political climate. You can find a whole bunch of us on Facebook on the Mormons for Obama page. There is also LDS and Left of Center. October 16, 2012 at 1:24 am #260651Anonymous
GuestI’ve thought of something else that helps me regulate my responses and mood in lessons. A Presbyterian friend once asked me to join a Bible study group. There was “homework” that you completed before attending the weekly talk and break-out small group discussions. The rule in the small group was that you would not contribute if you hadn’t done the reading and writing assigned. I felt a lot of unity and positive, constructive energy there. It was just a passing thing that I did with my friend, but it was a good lesson for me. October 16, 2012 at 11:33 am #260652Anonymous
GuestI would go to the Bishop, state your feelings, and request that all the political talk cease and desist. Also don’t be afraid to be the dissenting voice.
Marlin K Jensen – previous church historian is a democrat
James E Faust was a democrat
They need to understand their political views (I am a conservative through and through) have no place in the 3 hour block nor in church activities.
I speak out when it happens. you should too

GuestThis is a really good discussion. Politics should be left out of church. Even when I was teaching Chapter 19 out of the lesson manual it was about to go in that direction until my Elder’s Quorum president reminded us not to talk about politics in church. It can be a sensitive subject. I’m not voting for Romney or Obama. I’m leaning towards independent, although I don’t know of any independent candidates yet, -
