Hence why Sunday’s lesson bothered me. I don’t like to discuss politics at church (or really anywhere else for that matter), and the lesson wasn’t even a discussion, it was a lecture by a very orthodox couple. The subject was the founding of our great nation and how it was all part of God’s plan and all necessary for the restoration of the church. Why do you think the railroad came along when it did? (The guy actually said that, while I was thinking to myself “It could have come a little earlier for lots of the pioneers, especially Willie and Martin.”) And since most of our current GAs don’t talk on the subject much (or at all), the quotes they read were all old McConkie and Benson era. Before the Benson quote the sister made it a point of saying “Now this is the prophet speaking….” That’s why I went and researched it. Yes, clearly they (the teachers) want Benson’s quote to be true and have no doubt it is, and clearly some members of the class were eating it up – I didn’t lift my head long enough from my tablet to see who wasn’t drinking the Kool-Aid, but I’m sure there were others who weren’t. So I guess when I’m in the voting booth this November I’ll be asking myself “What would Ezra do?” (or not)
I want to clarify my earlier comment about Benson being a little lower on my list of favorite presidents. In fairness, he’s probably in a multiple tie for third.

So, today the sister stood up and apologized for using the Benson quote because she since discovered it wasn’t necessarily his and was given by someone else. I applaud her honesty and willingness to publicly apologize. It doesn’t change my overall feelings about the lesson, but it does soften it a but. I’ll still be voting for the lesser of the evils whenever I figure out which that is.

GuestFrankly, I don’t like framing this as the lesser of two evils, since I don’t believe either of the two main candidates is evil. Badly flawed? Yes. In one case, particularly, perhaps clinically, certifiably nuts? Yes. Evil? No.

GuestThis was too funny not to share. On FB a friend posted: Quote:Very interesting!! I took this quiz and see that I agree with Donald Trump’s stand on the vast majority of issues, especially the ones I feel most strongly about! My views align with his more closely than with any other candidate’s.
So far so good but the reason I’m posting this is the first response:
Quote:I think most temple worthy members do also
😆 I’ve seen that same sentiment expressed by more than just a few people in my ward. That’s the deep south for you though. Good times. Good times.

GuestWell, it was the Deep Sourh that was the main force of his nomination, since so many of their primaries were early in the process. I loved my time in Alabama, but there were aspects . . .

GuestI use the lesser of evils as a figure of speech. I don’t believe either main candidate to be truly evil either. I have however said for the past several elections the I have voted for the lesser of the evils each time. It’s why I voted for Bill Clinton twice and why I didn’t vote for Barack Obama either time. I suppose the lesser evil in this case is the one I thought would do the least damage. I actually had a pretty good track record voting for the winner up until Obama. The same cannot be said for NY governor, I have never voted for the winner, although I did sometimes get it right when I lived in Pennsylvania (where conservative Democrats often win). GuestIn all seriousness, nibbler…that was my thinking most of the time…maybe Trump is a jerk…but so far I align more to his views (if we really know what those are). I would rather vote for policy than for personality.
But these candidates make it so hard to feel good about voting for them despite character. Ugh.
Did you see the Mormon candidate?
He sounds wacky to me…I’d vote for Trump before this guy…but hey…we all follow our conscience and do what we think will help. Right? This guy is allowed to believe he can make a diff.

GuestMy wife got a “survey” from the republican party. Each question was yes/no framed as: “Do you think the following is important?” The first few were pretty innocuous though definitely leading. “Do you think it is important for small businesses to grow without big government regulations getting in the way.” Ok. Sure. “Do you think it is important to end illegal immigration?” Yeah, I guess. How exactly do you propose doing that? I also wish to end illegal drugs, illegal gun violence, and poverty but I do not see a box to check for that.
Later in the survey the questions got pretty negative. “Do you think it is important to appoint a special prosecutor from the DOJ to investigate Hilary’s emails?” No… haven’t we been through that already? “Do you feel that it is important to repeal Obama’s executive actions?” Which ones? Maybe he has some good ones mixed in with some bad. “Do you feel that it is time to replace Obama’s failed economic and foreign policies?” Well I suppose if they have failed then they deserve a revision…as long as they only replace the “failed ones.” There was also something in there about preventing stacking the supreme court with leftist activist judges.
And so it went, getting more and more bombastic with each question. Finally it got to the point.
“If these things are important to you please make a donation in the amount of $150, $100, or $50.”
Oh, so this wasn’t really a survey at all but just a way to get me all riled up to donate to the political cause. Then to add insult to injury….
“If these things are not important to you and we cannot count on your support then please return the survey with $10 to tabulate your survey results.”

GuestWe’ve gotten a few phone call “surveys” like that. People are more willing to take a survey than they are to listen to a sales pitch so someone got wise and started disguising sales pitches as surveys. They didn’t ask us for money though. I think they were just interested in getting us to vote a certain way.

GuestPolls are showing Clinton and Trump tied at this point. Of course…this early that means little…except that Trump is to be taken seriously. It seems that Clinton is just “that bad”. I think at this point, Romney was ahead of Obama but still lost.
So…debates still to come, we’ll see. But it seems kind of amazing that somehow Trump has established such a low expectation level that others would never be held to. I still can’t see how he does it.
Crazy.

I think the debates are what lost it for Romney. He didn’t stand up to Obama and was just not assertive enough. My opinion. I don’t think we’ll see either Trump or Clinton have that issue.

GuestNibbler – I have had a long day. No long week with a Stake Service Project. Sassy Trump was just what I needed. “Then we decimated one of them.” Brilliant. The voice over sounds like Nathan Lane when he’s doing his Birdcage accent. Bless you for this. I really needed it.

GuestBest tweet I saw following the 2nd presidential debate: Quote:Zero babies will be born 9 months from today.
