Is there a way to require approval from an admin or moderator of all new posts until we are confident in a person’s participation? We do it now for all first posts; could we simply extend it to all posts until a person is moved out of a “probationary” status (and assign MWallace to that probationary status without telling her that some are not being placed there)? That way MWallace wouldn’t be singled out in any way (even privately), but we could read her posts and others (like the most recent cult post) and discuss concerns with the authors (alllowing them to edit before posting) before approving them.

That would mean more work on our part, but I think the vast majority of new posts would be quick approvals whenever one of us logs on and checks.

    What do you think?

I am open to this idea. I would have to research the technical side in phpBB of setting that up — not a huge deal. I’ve done something like this process before in gaming guilds, where new members are probationary. The problem is managing the process of taking people off probation and making them full members. It has to be tracked and followed through.

I think this idea has to be delegated using the “Primary Moderator” organizational structure we already established (which actually needs some updating, not sure if JMB175 can still moderate actively for example). Primary moderators are responsible for reviewing posts from “probationary” forum members in their forum section, and approving them.

    Thoughts?

Yes, it would be fair to knock user “jmb275” down to a normal user if you want (you all know it’s me anyway) just to prune that user out of the list. That way we have a correct list of moderators. What Ray’s asking is certainly possible, and shouldn’t be too hard. I believe in phpBB you can specify how many posts you want to have moderated before they can post freely.

Whether or not we should do this is another question. I’m split on the idea.
