OON, I do think the council system functioned under JS, but that BY was more of a dictator. I also believe the unanimity thing in modern times is a more recent development possibly related to fallout from the Manifesto. Reading the accounts of OD2, I wonder how much total unanimity was in force then considering there were members of the Q12 who were opposed. On the other hand, it’s sort of hard to argue with the kind of revelatory experience they say they had, and those in favor of continuing the ban had become outnumbered.

In relation to an earlier statement I made about consensus, perhaps consensus really is a better word for what might happen sans unanimity. I still don’t think any of them are coerced into consensus, though, and some things they do reach unanimity on. There is a situation in my work where consensus of a committee is necessary at times, and as I’ve thought about that I don’t always fully agree but at the same time recognize it is the best course of action at the time. However, in those situations where I am very opposed and/or don’t think it’s the best course of action I do not consent.

It was not only Lee that was opposed, there were several others among that staunch conservative group of apostles at the time (including McConkie and Fielding Smith). There’s some kind of interesting church politics that went on during the DOM administration and shortly thereafter that involved J. Reuben Clark, who did not get along with DOM, and a concerted effort by Clark to bring into the Q12 more ultra conservatives. But that’s a bigger and more in depth story. Suffice it to say, that group of conservative members are what kept the ban for so long because, as stated, the quorums could not reach unanimity. No unanimity, no change.

I guess I didn’t realize that. I will say, though, that if HBL actually did make the statement attributed to him by his daughter, I find that to be especially troublesome. It almost sounds like he’s saying, “I don’t really care what the Lord has to say about it; my mind is made up.”
