Guesthttp://www.cnn.com/2018/01/03/us/thomas-monson-mormon-president-dies/index.html He was a personal favorite of mine. I am going to miss him.

GuestI have admittedly not always been a Monson fan, but I have become one because of his message. I will miss him in multiple ways. January 3, 2018 at 12:56 pm #325816Anonymous
GuestSeems as usual I’m last to know! However, yes I do have fond memories of him, and I think he had important things to say about looking after our fellow humans.

Russell M Nelson.
I hate to say it but I’m glad Boyd K. Packer is out of the running.

GuestFor me, President Monson’s death marks the end of a personal era. As a child, I never tracked these changes in the Quorum of the Twelve (I’m not sure that I understood the difference between Seventies and Apostles). They were just men who spoke at Conference from time to time. Right before I left on my mission, Elders Nelson and Oaks were called as Apostles and that seemed to be the point where I understood the significance of their calling. President Monson, in a way, was a marker for my childhood years. With his death, some part of my past also seems gone. So I am sad for his family (though I think his ill health made his death a blessing) and a little sad for myself. January 3, 2018 at 4:03 pm #325814Anonymous

The truth is I’m sadder about this than I am about TSM’s death. It’s going to be a tough couple (or few) years for some of us.

This. Yes.
For quite a few years my heart was eager to have TSM pass. His body and mind deserved it. On the flip side, my stronger wish was that the next couple in line would pass before him. I kept hoping for a Harold B. Lee type deal. Didn’t get it. My heart aches for the potential that lies ahead. It could go different but I don’t expect it to.

Thanks for this post, Gerald. Good reflection. I share some of those feelings myself.

Pres Hinckley…I’d say more PR and connection to media and the world and that included building temples to open coffers to make smaller temples a way for more people to get ordinance work done.
President Hunter…I think of the Atonement emphasis he brought.
President Benson was president when I was on my mission and I thought of emphasis on Book of Mormon and Pride.
What would this forum group say will be the thing Monson will be remembered for?

The passing is bittersweet. Monson was a good guy but wan’t in the best health. I watched a relative with dementia die, just a little bit every single day. It was difficult. Granted people experience dementia differently, but for the family it’s difficult. Losing a family member spiritually before losing them physically plus the added burden of caretaking. For the person with dementia… it’s impossible to tell how much they know about their situation, they exist in their own reality.
I can’t imagine Monson was doing much by way of leading the church in recent years and he didn’t really have that much of an assertive personality to begin with. That’s why I don’t think the church will change very much under new leadership. I get the feeling other alphas have already been leading the church for several years now.

GuestAssertive? The guy managed to persuade East Germany to allow a temple, which is one of his most understated achievements January 3, 2018 at 5:50 pm #325822Anonymous
GuestTo be fair, Benjamin Franklin probably helped a little with those negotiations. January 3, 2018 at 6:09 pm #325823Anonymous
GuestI have always seen President Monson as a loving and joyful grandfather type. I have no knowledge of how he might be in closed door meetings but I suspect that he would be a moderating influence on the more hardline elements. May he find rest (or continued service opportunities, considering TSM’s personality) in the bosom of the Father. January 3, 2018 at 6:31 pm #325824Anonymous
GuestI’ve heard people say he was grouchy but I put that down to the fact he was working into old age. I can forgive that – an old saying has it that “old age does not arrive by itself.” I’m told he really missed his wife too.
Given that he became an apostle in 1963, I agree with the end of an era statement. One wonders if by putting him in so young he was groomed for the presidency. I would say the same about Bednar who will probably outlast most of the current ones.

GuestOn another note, the recent Hamula debacle must have been pretty stressful too since he may have had something to do with calling him originally. (I’ve commented on that elsewhere.) -
