GuestIn todays SL Tribune there’s an article about some scout leaders who pushed over a rock formation at Goblin Valley, The leader that did it said he was concerned about safety of people/children on the trail and that he felt “prompted” to do it. He went on to say he was glad he did it but wished he hadn’t.http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57012279-78/rock-taylor-formation-hall.html.csp In using the word “prompted” he’s saying he was told by the Spirit to do it. If that is the case could it be that he’s regretting it because now he’s possibly facing jail time? My question is how often does the feeling of receiving a message to do something from the Holy Ghost play into what we do and could it be that we might be fooling ourselves?

GuestI know that sometimes the update these articles or rewrite them, but I don’t see anywhere in the article where he says he was prompted. I do believe he only feels sorry about it because he has been caught and could be charged. From a theoretical standpoint (if he was prompted), this is one of the areas I have trouble with (as you might know if you have read stuff I have wriiten elsewhere here). In answer to your question, yes, indeed I do believe we can be easily fooled and I have come to not trust my feelings or promptings. I know there are many stories where such promptings have supposedly saved actual lives, etc., but I can’t say any prompting I have ever had made any such impact. I can say one that I followed made a huge difference in my life – for the worse.

GuestDark Jedi, It’s just at the end of the article on the second page.
Quote:“I’ll take my chances with the cops rather then my conscience after hearing a family was crushed to death by a rock I was prompted to move.”

GuestMaybe it was; maybe it wasn’t. I have no idea, especially if the rock really did pose a danger to visitors. Either way, I think he shouldn’t have done it. He should have gone to the right people, explained his concern and let them decide whether or not to take any action. Without immediate and obvious danger, and with a legal alternative, I think he did the wrong thing.

GuestI watched the video that these guys recorded of themselves doing it. They were joyful and celebrated the act. It appears that afterward they started playing the we were trying to good game. It happened in An area full of balanced rocks. Saying they were concerned about visitor safety is trying to cover their tails. October 19, 2013 at 2:54 am #275428Anonymous
GuestI’ll tell you what–the video does not look good. The men appear to be treating their “alteration” of the formation lightly, and in a goofy, celebratory way. Whether it was a prompting or not, the men are whooping and hollering like it’s some kind of stunt. Tip for living in our internet-based world complete with camera phones and instagram–we are all being watched. Don’t film yourself doing questionable things. GuestYeah, the attitude while doing it was the worst part – and, I think, contradicts the “prompting” justification. I get the sense it was an afterthought, but that’s just a guess. -
