GuestI have been looking for a good Mormon History discussion board, but every place I’ve seen just seems to be a battle ground. So anyway, a little “pure history” trivia: Who was the first woman baptized in the church? It’s not that hard, well impossible actually – but see what you can come up with before doing any research.
A related question: How many people were baptized prior to April 6th 1830?

GuestGood questions! I wish I knew the answer. My first guess for first woman baptized would be Emma Smith. Obviously Joseph and Oliver baptized each other prior to April 6. I can’t think of anyone else. I do wonder if any of the first 6 at the first meeting when the church was organized, but I can’t name them either.

GuestGood guess, Emma would be a logical choice, she certainly had opportunity. But the reality is Emma wasn’t baptized until the end of June 1830 — with a group of 13 in Colesville. Any more guesses?

GuestPlease tell me it wasn’t Fanny Alger! 😆 😆 Perhaps the woman who saw the Golden Plates, Eliza R. Snow?February 11, 2011 at 3:05 pm #239786Anonymous
GuestEliza Snow joined the church after Joseph and Emma moved to Hiram Ohio, there were at least a hundred members many women in the church by then. It really isn’t that hard, think close to home. Two women were baptized with the April 6th 1830 organization (and two men). Nobody knows which woman went first, at least I haven’t read it in any journals yet. The prominent one should be easy to guess, bonus points for the other.

GuestWas it Lucy Mack Smith? February 11, 2011 at 4:00 pm #239788Anonymous
Guest:clap:     😆 YES!!! CanadianGirl gets the prize! Actually we don’t know for sure. Sarah Rockwell (Porter Rockwell’s mother) was also baptized that day, one of them went first.

GuestLucy Mack Smith would have been my guess. I promise. 😆 February 11, 2011 at 5:40 pm #239790Anonymous
GuestI take it one of Joseph’s sisters would have been an early convert too. February 11, 2011 at 6:03 pm #239791Anonymous
GuestYes Sam, Joseph’s younger siblings – William, Catherine, and Don Carlos, along with Hyrum’s wife Jerusha were all baptized on June 9th 1830 – at the conference in Fayette. Joseph’s older sister Sophronia was married and I think living somewhere else. Of course the brothers Hyrum and Harrison (more often called Samuel H. these days) were baptized in May and June 1829.

GuestTo be a little controversial, wasn’t it Mother Eve? Jeff Walsh June 16, 2012 at 3:00 pm #239793Anonymous
GuestGood point Jeff, I did not specify the modern restored church. But on that topic I never pictured people of the old testament being baptized. I always thought it started with John the baptist and the new law with Christ. June 16, 2012 at 6:20 pm #239794Anonymous
GuestThe correct answer always is 42. June 18, 2012 at 3:00 pm #239795Anonymous
GuestJeff beat me to it. I wanted to also say “Eve” just to be funny. I know that wasn’t the answer you were looking for. Ray’s answer is good too. When in doubt, 42 is the correct answer.
