GuestI am reading a book called “Refuge”, by Terry Tempest Williams, as part of my Master’s program in Creative Writing. It deals with the rise of the Great Salt Lake in the mid-80’s and cancer in her family – and weaves the two together masterfully. There is a section that talks about the dramatic decline in the bird populations as a result of the lake’s rise, and she makes a very simple, profound statement about that situation that I believe applies to many of the things we discuss here – especially anything related to faith. I read it and immediately thought of our conversations: Quote:“Nobody knows the answers. We are working with the questions.”

In the college classes I teach, I always tell the students that it’s not the answers that matter (and I often don’t even give an answer to a particular issue or problem), but rather we should focus on the questions — they are always more interesting. The students don’t really buy into this, though — they just want to memorize some simplistic, canned answers for the test. Probably that way in religion (and life) as well…

GuestThat’s one of my favorite books of all time! (Which I guess makes sense for someone who loves nonfiction, personal narrative, bird watching, feminism, a liberal approach to faith, families, the natural world, and lessons I learn from my work as a nurse).
😮 ) I’ve read it many times. It’s a gold mine for beautiful, insightful quotes. The author was raised LDS and considers herself a Mormon by heritage (as of the last time I heard her speak).
I highly recommend the book. It always brings me to tears, but I’m always glad to have re-read it (and find new quotes to underline).
Thanks for sharing Ray.
