…it reminds me of my brother, who, not long after his mission went out with some friends and got drunk at a campfire party. He felt a little bad about it and told his bishop what he had done. His bishop simply asked him, “Did you get it out of your system? Are you done?” My brother said yes, the bishop let my brother go with his temple recommend in hand.
I like this response from that bishop, who sounds like he “gets it”. I don’t like attitudes in the church where people think breaking a rule means you must be punished by church authorities. More important is understanding your brother’s heart, his intentions, and overlooking mistakes but allowing repentance to wash it away and move ahead. However, I don’t imagine that would apply if there were multiple “campfile parties” that went on and on year after year. But just once…I’m glad the bishop could see the big picture.
