I am classified as an essential worker and, with the health restrictions in place for attendance at the facility, I have been working fairly regular overtime to help when we are short-staffed. Last weekend, for example, I worked double shifts on both days (6am-10pm). That is rare, but it might get more common if ND starts to get hit harder – and, especially, if my workplace sees an infection. If we get one, we almost surely are going to get dozens or hundreds. There simply is no way around it.

I share that simply to say I check in when I can, but I can’t very often.

Thanks for keeping things rolling so well. I agree that home-church probably has lowered the general stress levels of those who participate and merely lurk.

Thanks for checking in and letting us know what’s up. It can be very stressful for essential workers.

I have been off since March 20 but will be returning to work this coming Thursday apparently. We will be wearing masks, etc. With the facility slated for closure, we’re down to three residents now and will likely be empty by the end of May. My mother-in-law is in a nursing home which is the local hot spot. There are 52 confirmed cases (plus 14 staff) and all 6 deaths in this county have been there. They tested all residents of the home this past week and she is positive but asymptomatic and was moved to one of the COVID units. She has none of the other underlying conditions which seem to portend poor outcomes so I’m expecting her to come through but there is always that uncertainty – she is 87 and bedridden.

I hope your MIL is doing ok, DJ.

This time is especially important to be caring for the poor and vulnerable.

Friday was two weeks since her positive test and being moved to the COVID isolation unit. She was retested Friday and while she remains asymptomatic she tested positive. The policy is two negative tests in 48 hours to go back to regular rooms. Not sure when they will retest with the positive. All 20 deaths in our county have been at that facility.

    Curt,

Thanks for serving people. I know it’s a job, but it’s serving people and it makes a world of difference.

    DJ,

I hope your employment situation and your MIL’s situation improves.

I’ve been extremely busy with work lately and I find that when I have the time, I often don’t have the energy to do much. I’ll echo my thanks for holding down the fort.

I have been off work for about a month. I will attend a special meeting on Monday to learn how we are planning to reopen.

    Stay safe everyone.

I am returning to work Monday 5/18 after having been off since 3/20. We must wear masks except when alone in our own offices and otherwise practice social distancing. Supervisors are working every day, my staff is working every other day to reduce the number of people in the workspace. There are two supervisors in my department, and neither of us see the reason we both need to be there every day but it is what it is. I can’t complain because it is a state job and I have been paid all of this time I have been home and my accruals are intact. In one way I’m glad to be going back and getting in a routine again. But I have also realized how much I am looking forward to retiring – I liked it. We also have a long holiday weekend coming up and I have 2 personal days to use before the end of June (use them or lose them).

MIL has been in the COVID unit 3 weeks now, she was tested a week ago and was still positive. She was tested again yesterday 5/15 and we’ll know the results Monday. If negative, which I think is highly likely, she’ll be retested and moved back to her own room this week. They haven’t had a death there in a few days and have reported some recoveries. She remained symptom free the entire time, but other than her depression and (supposed) MS she’s a pretty healthy 86 year old so more power to her.

DJ, sounds like some positive news on both fronts. Good to hear. God bless you.

MIL again tested positive. I don’t know how that works, she tested positive to get put there 3 weeks ago and is still positive. I thought the thing ran its course in 2 weeks symptoms or not. The good news is there hasn’t been another death there is a week and they have had several (8 last count I heard with more tests pending) recoveries and no new cases for several days. There is a nursing home in a neighboring ward where there are at least a couple members that is getting hit hard now. They had been “bragging” about how well they had done in getting through it with no positives, then last week they announced a “contracted employee” had tested positive followed by the announcement 2 days later a resident was positive. A week later they have tons of positives and 2 deaths. I swear the nursing homes are just incubators for this disease. I think MIL has been very lucky.

I’m back at work every day, my part of NY is opening up and barbers should open by next week. The dictator …er governor announced today that church services of 10 or fewer people can resume. 😆 Maybe our ward can hold 10 mini sacrament meetings this week.

I am salaried but can earn overtime when allowed due to need. By the end of this month, I will have worked just over 100 overtime hours in 3 1/2 weeks – plus being on-call next week.

We had three positives in another facility (2 inmates and one employee), so we are hoping it doesn’t spread further there or into our facility.

Stay safe curt. Everyone’s struggles seem so different – yet everyone seems to be struggling.

Good news and bad news at the nursing home. They hadn’t had a COVID death in a week then last Thursday there were two, one of which was MIL’s room mate. MIL did have a negative test and has been swabbed again so it’s looking like she may be cleared, counted as recovered, and return to her regular room by the end of the week.

MIL did get her two negative tests and is back in her own room. Her former room mate is not there she says but we don’t know her fate because of privacy, etc. We suspect she was a casualty because her health was quite poor before.

Everyone where I work was required to test the second go-round, since someone tested positive. At this point, it looks like it might be only the one – and they were young and asymptomatic.
