GuestI have been pondering this for awhile. I am depressed and see a counselor outside of the LDS Family Services since it is less expensive. I’m pretty sure the therapist is a Mormon, but she isn’t a TBM. My concerns are: 1) Why does the Church have to outsource to other church entities? For example other ministers of other faiths have to have certification in counseling in order to be pastors so they can help people with their problems both temporal/spiritual.
2) If depression and unemployment are “social,” or “temporal” issues then why is everything considered spiritual unto the Lord, both temporal and spiritual? This appears to be a contradiction.
3) Why LDS unemployment services? It seems like the local church should pool together its resources to help a person get a job without having to outsource once again.
4) I have applied to LDS Church jobs that I feel qualified, doing everything by the book, and I don’t even get call backs for job interviews. I even live (regrettably) in Utah where many of these jobs are. Additionally, I have worked part time for some of the Church affiliated entities with good recommendations.
At this point my testimony of the Church is waning considerably and I just have a testimony of Jesus at this point. I don’t see Christ in his Church like I used to. I don’t care if the Church employs me or not I just would like to know what I am doing wrong. It just seems like there is this huge disconnect from everything. I remember sobbing during Elder D. Todd Christofferson’s talk about the young single mother who his family “took a chance on” to redeem her soul. As for me I have not been redeemed and I am crucified daily.

GuestMate, I don’t have any balm for the wound you feel towards the Church and some of its services/programs, but I’ll just offer this small defense to the outsourcing you note: for some things (like employment resources, PEF, counselling, etc.) the Church is able to leverage its relative size nationwide, and even worldwide, to provide services and programs in smaller areas that would never be able to sustain them on their own. GuestI think on the mental health front, it is only recently that the church came to acknowledge Mental Illness as a legitimate problem so outsourcing there is probably a good thing in my opinion as you will probably get someone with a bit more experience. Conversely though, the mental health profession itself has really only been making good progress since the early 90’s itself so I can’t be too hard on the church there. GuestSorry you are depressed Jamison. Depression stinks! Personally, I think it is a good thing that you see a therapist outside of the church. Particularly if it is less expensiive. As far as outsourcing of social services, I don’t expect anything from the church so I don’t really care. Sorry, not trying to sound insensitive. If I am having a problem with employment or mental health, I would rather look outside of the church for help.

GuestI’m sorry to hear about your depression, and I sincerely hope the counselling is beneficial. At least you’re seeing a professional! Here in the UK all professional counsellors employed by LDS Family Services have been laid off so that the money can be ploughed into the missionary programmes. The memo that came through said that all counselling would return to being the responsibility of Bishops. My mind boggles at this!
