It might not matter whether it’s the BP or the entire ward council if SM themes are being set as an action item during an already overlong meeting. I can imagine scenarios where people have a calendar with the open Sundays in one hand and a list of talks from the most recent conference in the other. I don’t know how we do it in our ward, this is one of those areas where every ward is going to be different.

I was in a bishopric where I was told that is how the bishop wanted it done. I was rebellious and often picked topics going back a few years. 😈 I am SOOOO bad.

If the SMP also conducts the meeting, then it would open the door for women to have a much more visible position. It is a myth that the person conducting SM has to be a member of the bishopric. That is the program the Church has set up in CH2, but last time I checked the D&C, I couldn’t find any mention of the priesthood being a requirement to conduct a meeting. The authority of SM resides with the presiding officer, whether he goes to the pulpit or not.

It is also a myth that one needs to have the priesthood to pass the sacrament. It is our policy in the CH that this is to be the case but it is not doctrine.

“What’s your talk going to be about, brother?”

    “Sin.”

    “Can you be more specific?”

    “I’m against it.”

I overheard a conversation yesterday about another ward – different stake – having fast Sunday on Easter. There was a missionary returning home and leaving within a week. For school, I assume. The second Sunday in April is the only time she could speak. So, fast Sunday on Easter. I understand that they felt themselves to be in a bind. Maybe it’s an act of charity towards this missionary that would have Christ’s full blessing.

This repeating Easter gripe – fast Sunday conflicts, GC conflicts – has become emblematic of my relationship with the church. Good and sincere people don’t always have the same priorities. But when you don’t match up on a regular basis or on some vitally important-to-you issues, are you really in the right place?

Is there some new rule in the last couple of months that returning missionaries can only speak on Fast Sunday? I’ve heard plenty of missionary farewell and return talks on regular Sundays. All it takes is putting them in one of the regular talk slots. Heck, it’s doing the bishopric a favor by having someone who *wants* to fill one of those slots…and might have enough to say to make up for someone else’s short talk.

There are only three times my extended family gets together; Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving. Each of those is a family feast. I’m not going to skip out on one of those because somebody decided that Fast Sunday needed to be rescheduled.

NightSG, Fast Sunday is always in conflict with GC. So local units move it to either the Sunday before or the Sunday after GC. There is no Church rule, and it is done either way. In this particular case, the ward Ann is talking about put Fast Sunday the week before GC (which is Easter) so that the missionary could speak the week after GC. They didn’t move FS, it was already not going to be the first Sunday in April.

If it has been me, I would have had FS the same week as the returning missionary, and then announce that we will have 15 minutes for testimonies, after which we’ll turn the remainder of the meeting over to the missionary. Problem solved.

When I was much more TBM’ish Easter was one more Sunday. Now that I am trying to figure out where I am as far as beliefs of any religious kind, the thought of a being willing to suffer for me does feel good. I can stand off and look at this from a psychological perspective and pick at that, but I have come to be fine with myself liking that.

We had a wonderful meeting today, with all of the talks focused on Christ, the resurrection, and the atonement.

I asked the two adult speakers for electronic copies of their talks. If I get them, I will share them. They truly were wonderful.

Also, our Priesthood meeting lesson was on Pres. Uchtdorf’s talk, “Lord, is it I?” It was an excellent discussion.

I live in a very good ward, even with some hardcore, traditional, orthodox members.

Our Sacrament meeting was 3/4 Easter centered. All the hymns were – I like that. The choir sang a medley of Savior centered primary songs. The first two speakers spoke on the Resurrection and Atonement. The second speaker was the best of the day. The third speaker gave a talk on being temple worthy. It wasn’t too preachy, but it was off the topic and I noticed the row in front of us cleared out shortly after he announced the title.

We didn’t stay beyond that. We chatted a bit with ward members then came home. We had dinner to fix.

I was proud of our ward today. Testimonies were sincere and focused, and I felt a concerted effort in the chapel to bring the spirit in. We made do and compensated for things we couldn’t change.

I wish we would read the Easter story, sing the Easter hymns, and let the poetry of the scriptures lift and carry us. We have fifty other Sundays to say “what it all means.” But you have to have heard it in the first place.

My husband read an article saying the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Coptic Churches are opening a conversation about synching their calendars and setting a fixed date – either second or third Sunday in April – for Easter. I kind of like the movability of it now. It takes effort and planning to prepare for it. But if the second week of April forever is the price we pay for never “skipping” it again, I’m all for it.

But today was still good. Happy Easter, everyone.

Ours was a simple testimony meeting. People said Happy Easter a few times, otherwise, nothing out of the norm. Which is a shame.
