I got into a heated discussion today with a friend and study partner at school today about reddit. I have never browsed the site, but I understand it to be some sort of meta-forum with a massive anti-religion stance, or rather that there is a pervasive anti-religion sentiment among many of its users. He frequents it regularly, and whenever I ask about it he says “don’t go there man, you’ll stop being mormon.” Or “you’ll become atheist.” I find it a very strange that he would say this. He knows that I am an active, but non-believing mormon, just as he is an active, but non-believing catholic. (Those labels aren’t totally accurate of course.) So I’m not sure what he means when he says these things. I told him I thought his responses are very offensive and condescending, but he persisted, trying to explain that I just couldn’t know unless I was a regular reddit reader. (Reddite? I’m sure there’s a name for these folks.) Can anybody speak to this? Is my friend just a pompous jerk?

I’ve never spent much time on Reddit, but I know they call themselves Redditors. I lean towards him just being a pompous jerk.

I do not use Reddit much other than for news and the like, but, with all things on the internet, much of it is what you look for. For instance, there is a pro-LDS subgroup (that held the AMA last week), and there is also an ex-mormon subgroup. That said it was only relatively recently that the pro-LDS site had more subscribers than the ex-moromon sites…

I spend quite a bit of time there. Reddit is really what you make of it. It’s segregated into a whole bunch of subreddits (such as reddit.com/r/latterdaysaints) which you can subscribe to. The main page then shows posts from all of the subreddits you’ve subscribed to, or you can go directly to the subreddit to see the posts from that sub.

If you want a great experience, look for subreddits that interest you. My wife doesn’t do reddit, but she does occasionally browse /r/quilting. Here’s a recent thread with a bunch of lists of people’s favorite subs: http://www.reddit.com/r/latterdaysaints/comments/1v9zca/reddit_is_what_you_make_of_it_here_is_a_list_of/

It seems that reddit’s biggest demographic is the educated, geeky, 20-something male. It does have an atheistic bent, but there are a lot of religious people and religious subreddits as well.
