Interesting article, Ray. Thanks for posting.

I will say that I enjoy the gift giving, and seeing the young kids get so excited. I don’t put the responsibility on stores or any other group to teach the true meaning of Christmas to my family, so if people will buy things, I can’t blame stores for marketing it heavily on this important time of year for retailers.

I have spent a lot of time this year, however, really wanting to make this season meaningful, and reduce the debt, stress, and commercialization of it. But that is my responsibility, not others’. However, I find this theme common among my family and others I talk to – it is a prevelant feeling people feel Christmas is just all about buying buying buying. If it is something that takes so much effort to keep reminding ourselves the true meaning…maybe things are out of balance. It shouldn’t be such a chore.

I just don’t think a war needs to be created to fight for it…it is a personal thing to handle within my home.

Amen, Heber. My take away is: “Don’t blame the stores and others for rampant consumerism and commercialization. Look in the mirror, and, if what you see bothers you, change.”
