Hey all I’m doing a research project of sorts and want your input. For you what are the top 5 doctrines of the LDS church. What I mean by doctrine is:

“doc·trine

1.a particular principle, position, or policy taught or advocated, as of a religion or government: Catholic doctrines; the Monroe Doctrine.

2.something that is taught; teachings collectively: religious doctrine.

3.a body or system of teachings relating to a particular subject: the doctrine of the Catholic Church.”

and by top 5 I mean the top 5 that get repeated most often in church meetings (All Sunday and GC). I appreciate all input on this.

For me the top 5 would be:

1. The atonement of Jesus Christ and all things related to his life

2. Importance of family

3. Missionary work

4. Preparation for the Second Coming

5. Teachings from the BoM

I don’t know if I would label these as the top doctrines taught by our church, but they are the top 5 doctrines that led to my convictions–if that helps.

1-humility

2-personal testimony

3-atonement

4-temple ordinances (this includes family)

5-charity (this includes missionary work)

From the church I would say the following:

1. We have a prophet today

2. The BoM is true

3. The Godhead

4. The family

5. Obeying the commandments leads to happiness

What we don’t treat as doctrine is anything the prophets after JS have said because what have they really given us since JS?

I’ve found that the top 5 that are repeated in church are a bit cyclical. For instance in December the conversation gravitates toward tithing because of tithing settlement… then you don’t hear too much about it until the end of the next year. Stretched out over time I’d say I hear the most about:

1) Missionary work/hasten the work.

2) Obedience.

3) The pressing need to do home/visiting teaching.

4) Something relating to the hardships faced by the pioneers of the church (including JS), it’s a common theme in many lessons.

5) We are children of god.

2. Obedience to commandments brings blessings and protection (Word of Wisdom and Tithing mostly)

3. Chastity / Modesty (promoting our specific LDS views on sexuality)

4. Outsiders (aka “The World”) are dangerous, and we are in a high-stakes conflict with them.

I would point out that there may be two (or more) sets of top 5 doctrines. The first would be the top five doctrines as declared from the pulpit of General Conference and from official church sources such as lesson manuals. That would probably be quantifiable with a few assumptions and a lot of work. The second set of top five doctrines might depend on your location and local leaders. Right now we’re hearing about two things in my stake – family history work and emergency preparedness. If you are a 12 year old Deacon in the United States all you probably hear is don’t touch girls, earn your eagle, and go on a mission.

I would recommend going through the lesson manuals, narrowing your focus to adults, an d also looking at adult-directed conference talks. See what topics come to the fore. You could total up the topics and come up with a top five.

I personally think these are the top doctrines:

1. Obeying the commandments

2. Following church leaders

3. Commitment (as evidenced by service to the church)

4, Prayer

5. Scripture reading

Interesting question. Thanks for getting me to think. Here are my five:

1) Obedience The first law of the Church (particularly good for children, and new members, but can be overdone by some, IMO)

2) Love The greatest commandment

3) Free Agency The foundational principle of mortality that allows us the freedom to choose good or evil

4) Atonement The only way we can overcome our frailties and get right with God. May I suggest under Atonement we

must have faith and humility for it to work. (that way I can keep my principles to 5.)

5) Personal Revelation Holy Ghost for some, and the Light of Christ for all. (Regardless of our lot in life, we can choose the good

from among the options presented us, whether Mormon, Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist, Hindi, Agnostic, or Atheist.)

I would say:

1. Nature of God (the Godhead)

2. Atonement of Jesus Christ

3. Need for a Restoration of the Truth

4. The Plan of Salvation (which does encompass the Atonement)

5. Concepts related to the Priesthood.
