I just wanted to say Thanks for engaging him Roy. I’m not in the right mindset to do so at the moment.

They’re an orthodox believer following the nature of orthodox believers. From their perspective, they think they’re helping.

I’m not sure whether to engage. On the one hand, they’re just following their nature. They’ll probably get bored and leave if they don’t get traction. On the other hand, they’re a bishop, and it would be nice to broaden the perspective of a bishop as it would help the people in their ward. When it comes to broadening perspectives, maybe more time and experience as a bishop will help them more than we can.

Yeah, He seems to be fairly compassionate

On the other hand, he is also pretty committed to his perspectives being the right ones (because of revelation). I was like that once, I wrapped myself in a security blanket of certainty.

I suppose monitoring his posts to see if he violates our rules is in order.

    Shouldn’t have, but I engaged.

Not sure thumping harder on the exact messaging that people hear at church is going to do anything for people here. Their posts read like they’re a response to an assumption that people leave the church simply because they don’t know enough about it or because their testimony isn’t strong enough.

I don’t know kind ways to say, “Yes, we all know what the party line is.”

I read your post to him and applaud you Ben. I couldn’t have said it better and you probably said it nicer than I would have. But as has been done before I think it’s important that the message of who we are and what we do gets through.

I will engage at some point in the not too distant future. I have had family here for the holiday and I’m about to head out on a trip to spend more time with family. I will have some downtime and I will likely end up in the right frame of mind at some point. That’s difficult for me at the moment because I’m struggling with a stake president who might be best pals with our new friend as they are of very similar mindsets.

I don’t know whether it was carefully calculated Roy, but I love your post in the coffee thread. It short circuits some of Rqatkins’ talking points.

I especially like your #2, since Rqatkins claims to be a bishop. Orthodox leaning leaders could use a dose of humility when they practice ministry with their flock.

    Thanks Ben.

We’ll see how this goes. ;)

I was very concerned about his original comment. I still am working my way through the posts I have not read yet, but I really liked a couple of his comments in other threads.

I really want to try to make this work and hope we respond as compassionately as possible. It would be great to have a serving Bishop read people’s comments and see “faithful diversity of views”.

I fear we may have already scared him off.

If the responses scared him away, he never was going to be a decent fit here. Nothing was close to extreme or attacking.
