GuestI just want to let everyone know I edited Sam Bee’s comment in the Giving Thanks post. He objected to and challenged the inclusion of the example of fact-checking in the post. I deleted that part of his comment and edited the post to state explicitly that the post was not a place to criticize what other people include as thanks.
He then wrote a separate comment complaining about it again.
I deleted that comment and added an Admin Note re-statimg the purpose of the post.
There is no way I am going to allow anyone to challenge someone else about the things for which they are thankful in that thread. People have to be confident they won’t get criticized to feel confident enough to post comments in the thread.
I don’t want to be seen as a hammer, but I will in this case.

GuestSam and I don’t see eye-to-eye very often anyway but he has seemed especially annoying and antagonistic of late. I agree with your call and also don’t mind being a hammer with him since he already doesn’t like me. November 23, 2020 at 7:14 pm #340690Anonymous
GuestAll speculation/unfair judgement, read with the grain of salt present… I think SamBee has a tendency to buy in to conspiracy theories. I’m also guessing that he’s received a lot of push back elsewhere for promoting conspiracy theories, hence his sensitivity to fact-checking. The fact-checkers may have been against some of his opinions so they become yet another layer in the conspiracy.
I’m not a fan of Sam’s reaction to the admin notes. He ignored two admin notes and continued by replying:
SamBee wrote:
That person made a political statement and a potentially dangerous one.
Which is ironic since I’ve felt that way about some of Sam’s opinions in the past.
I think we should explicitly add something to the site’s polices regarding political posts.

GuestI agree about adding something explicit about political posts – and writing a simple post stating it “live”. I think the live post should be first.

GuestI just deleted Sam Bee’s post you mentioned, nibbler – without public commentary. I wrote, “Ignoring explicit directions in the post” (or some other word than “directions”), which he should see. We will see how he responds.

I agree that Sam easily succumbs to these types of things including Prepping. I think my pushback to his prepping posts was pretty direct and eventually he stopped. That has been my general experience with him – eventually he does give up and he doesn’t have to have the last word.
On the other hand I do feel a bit bad about how hard I pushed. There are people who relied on food storage but because of their employment/income status, not because there was (or is) a shortage of food which is what he was asserting. Yes, sometimes there was no pasta on the shelf and the meat counter looked emptier than usual (but there was meat), there was plenty of other food in the stores.

How about something like this (feel free to edit/criticize/give input):
Members of the church around the world come in all different political and socio-economic stripes and colors. Politics and political discussions can elicit strong emotions in individuals and divide communities and families. While some members of the church live in areas where their political views are much different from what seems to be the majority view, this is generally not a reason by itself people dissociate themselves from the church. The mission of StayLDS is to help those who desire to maintain a relationship with the church do so.
Discussions of politics not directly related to helping someone maintain their relationship with the church are therefore prohibited.November 24, 2020 at 5:15 pm #340695Anonymous

GuestI like it. November 29, 2020 at 3:11 pm #340698Anonymous
GuestApparently I don’t have permission to create new posts in the rules and policies section so someone who does will need to post it there. I’m good with Nibbler’s edits. November 29, 2020 at 3:36 pm #340699Anonymous
GuestI modified the existing rules and etiquette post, updating the ‘last updated’ date in the process. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21” class=”bbcode_url”> November 29, 2020 at 8:29 pm #340700Anonymous
GuestThanks, good idea that I didn’t think of. There was a moderator notification to approve the post ❗ , which I did. I will also post the text of that part in the general forum for general information and heads up.December 6, 2020 at 7:26 pm #340701Anonymous
GuestThanks nibbler for your work in updating the rules. it helps! December 29, 2020 at 9:22 pm #340702Anonymous
GuestI moved Sambee’s post about Instagram to the parking lot for discussion. My concerns are:
1) This does not help our mission.
2) It is a link to a video with very little commentary or introduction from Sambee.
3) I am probably hyper sensitive right now to what I perceive to be conspiracy theories (I do acknowledge that personal privacy is a valid issue).
I will send a PM to Sambee letting him know what I did and that I am not sure the post helps our mission and that it will be discussed by the rest of our moderator team for resolution.
