Just wanted to give a report on a satisfying experience in serving humanity. I’m in the middle of a self-actualizing moment where time is flying faster than it normally does — I’m in flow.

Some of you know I started serving in a local community organization which I helped found about a month ago. Today, I returned from a rather important meeting involving negotiations, policy, and liaising with local elected officials and government administrators. It took many hours of preparation, as well as pre-meeting negotiations with my own stakeholders to determine a position on an issue that affects the larger community.

I am now sitting at home, doing the aftermath, and reflecting on how the experience stretched my skills, taxed my intellect, and has led to new challenges — which I have enjoyed.

I share this as evidence of how you can fill up your life with experiences that fill the void when you feel you can’t devote this kind of effort to your church service. For whatever reason. If your experience is like mine, the world is full of organizations, and people who need your skills, and who have projects that can engage you to the same extent church service did at one time. You can serve humanity, and amplify your talents in the process. All while maintaining ties with the church.

I’m feeling very fulfilled right now. I learned so much, and I’m experiencing things that have the same excitement and growth potential as church service once did.

My next project is an outgrowth of the experiences I had as a volunteer in the church previously — I am now designing an orientation program for volunteers.

Thanks for sharing SD. In many ways the church has prepared me to be a better community member in any organization I might want to participate in.
