    Quote:

    The Seagulls

    By Beverly Cochrane

    from The Friend, July 2011

    When pioneers went way out west,

    They planted precious seed.

    But when the little plants grew up,

    The crickets came to feed.

    The pioneers fought crickets off

    With hoe and cloth and flame.

    They battered hoards of crickets down,

    But still more crickets came.

    Pioneers prayed for relief,

    And Heavenly Father listened.

    He sent some hungry seagulls

    On a flying rescue mission.

    And when the crickets were all gone,

    The seagulls flown away,

    The pioneers said, “Thank you,”

    As they knelt in fields to pray.

    These seagulls saved the day in 1848.

    And the gull is now the state bird of Utah!

    When the harvest came in 1849

    more crickets came to feed,

    The seagulls were way outnumbered,

    The farmers still in need.

    This time the pioneers, all full of faith,

    didn’t bother with hoe, cloth or flame,

    They knelt in fields and said their prayers,

    … but no seagulls came.

    The state bird didn’t do its job,

    the crickets won the fight;

    Although prayers were said again in the fields,

    this time they weren’t saved from their plight.

    The farmers perservered on their own

    despite the little pests,

    the Salt Lake Valley grew and grew

    as the Saints overcame their tests.

    Primary children are told this story

    and how Seagulls are a sign;

    That God heard pioneer prayers in 1848

    (but aren’t told about 1849).

    Evenutally primary kids grow up

    and out of stage 3 that was simple and so sweet;

    I wonder if larvae crickets are taught,

    humans dip them in chocolate and call them “The other green meat”? :mrgreen:

    By the way, you can get your “other green meat” at http://www.InsectCandy.com” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.InsectCandy.com – Bacon and Cheese flavored crick-etts almost sound tempting :eh:

    Who has the last laugh now, crickets!!? Oh, yeah! Humans do, uh-huh! Take that, you little mongers!
