I thought this was a quick read and some good information, going beyond just Emma and BY:

Scattering Of The Saints: Schism Within Mormonism Paperback – September 10, 2007

by Newell G. Bringhurst (Editor), John C. Hamer (Editor)

There is a book titled: Beloved Emma:

    Quote:

The Illustrated Life Story of Emma Smith

    by: Lori E Woodland.

It is an interesting biography. I just started reading it.

I suspect that there isn’t a lot of documented material related to BY & ES after JS was killed.

It does quote JSIII & others of that time period.

Although I haven’t read it, you might find Mormon Enigma interesting to get Emma Smith’s perspective after Joseph was killed.

I agree with the recommendation for Mormon Enigma.

You might also find “The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power” helpful.

I love Emma because she is cast as both a saint and a villain in different contexts. She literally has stories from Utah Mormons told about her behaving so evil that they stretch credibility. Examples: Pushing a pregnant Eliza down a flight of stairs resulting in miscarriage. Asking to see Hyrum’s pocket watch and then refusing to give it back to his tearful widow. Attempting to poison JS. It can be easy to understand why the LDS of that day would demonize her and the RLDS would love her.

And yet our modern LDS vision of her is changing. I find it interesting how we can coopt the story of Emma Smith and spin it however we need to in order to fulfill our preferred narrative.

Getting to the truth of Emma is difficult because 1) she was probably “complicated” and conflicted about many issues and 2) because she never seemed to open up (at least in later years) and give a full accounting of her perspective. Even in the interview by her son JS III she seems to me to be very guarded (and sometimes outright misleading) in her responses.
