I can think of many incidents, but one that really sticks out is an episode involving my current stake president. We were having a stake high priest quorum meeting once where he related an experience he had with one of the apostles (can’t remember which one). They were preparing for a stake meeting when the organist arrived and began warming up. He was playing a “fancy classical number” according to the stake president, when the apostle went and asked him if he could play hymn number 132, “More Holiness Give Me.” The stake president said he could feel the spirit slowly enter through the corner of the ceiling and eventually permeate the room. He then stated that he was going to issue an edict to the auxiliaries that only hymns were to be played as prelude and postlude music.
Some time after this, we had a stake in-service meeting for the auxiliaries where one of the other ward organists mentioned the edict while the stake president was in the room. He looked flustered at first, but then mentioned that he wasn’t a musician and felt this was the best course to take. I then explained to him that many of the hymns in our hymnbook originated outside of our faith, and there is a whole world of spiritually enlightening music we would be excluding if we limited ourselves to the hymnbook. I also mentioned that he was holding us to a standard that not even the Tabernacle Choir is obligated to meet. He then got red in the face and said some variation of “when the leader (me) speaks, the thinking is done!” I was released as ward organist not long after this, even though I had actually been following his counsel from the time I was called.

GuestWelcome Kevin. You’re amongst friends here. You’re not a nut. Just like many of us on here you are struggling and wanting to hold on to the good of the church. We stand with you. This is not a place of harsh judgements or unkindness. You are in a good place. November 17, 2010 at 9:36 pm #234794Anonymous

GuestHi Kevin, I want to welcome you too. My husband was in the high council when he left the church. And we have a gay son. So, I think we will have lots in common. I will write you privately, but I hope you read my intro sometime. Bridget
