GuestThis letter to the editor appeared int he SL Tribune: http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/2811741-155/letter-as-we-confront-our-lds ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/2811741-155/letter-as-we-confront-our-lds A couple things I really like (emphasis added):
Quote:There will certainly be those surprised, perhaps troubled, by the article, but the church’s new inoculative approach to the strange parts of Mormonism is likely a good policy for the long term. Those of us living through this transitional period may be feeling the sting of betrayal, learning the narrative we were raised with was misleading and in many cases just plain false.
The youth, however, will grow up with far fewer conflicting accounts.Quote:While this increase in openness may result in friends and family leaving the church, I think if we truly consider, perhaps it shouldn’t be very surprising given the strange things we claim. We have some really weird history.
Maybe recognizing, and accepting, this will help us to be a bit more charitable to those who question. To those who doubt. To those who leave. August 9, 2015 at 3:52 pm #302764Anonymous
GuestI see it as an extension of the things I learned about Blacks and the priesthood, and plural marriage when I investigated the church. Everyone had answers for why those things happened, and I accepted them. Now there will be a longer list. Also, people who are generations into the church may well not have the same propensity to leave given the fact their entire family and social structure is built on it. Makes it easier to rationalize it all, particularly when you are young. August 9, 2015 at 4:20 pm #302765Anonymous
GuestI liked the Op-ed. He certainly mentions being more charitable to those that question. August 9, 2015 at 9:30 pm #302766Anonymous
GuestFrankly, I like the discussions like this that everyone is having. There is good dialogue going on right now. -
