GuestHad a small success at Church today. I overheard our former Bishop talking to our HPGL about something I developed when I was in his HPGL position in our Ward. It was about moving, and our HPGL was expressing frustratons with it. I walked by so they asked me about what I did. In a nutshell, I told them I distributed a policy statement disguised as a polite checklist to ward members under HP stewardship that said:
1. If you move within or out of the Ward, our involvement as priesthood leadership is to make announcements in meetings about the move and ask for volunteers there. The onus is on the members to arrange a truck and get their own volunteers beyond that.
So, if someone tells you Friday night they are moving Saturday morning, they are out of luck, since all we do is make announcements.
2. If people move into the ward as fresh new members, then it’s a full service move provided they have a truck arranged and arrange for their own load up in their origin location.
3. We don’t move pianos or appliances.
There was more to it, but that was the crux of it. Then I heard from this HPGL that his son was asking for my policy/guidelines since he was called to EQ in another Ward since he had heard about the “policy”. There was unanimous feelings amongst all of us that this is the way to go. And guess what, they nodded their heads when I said “I think that onerous, repetitive and frequently inconvenient service like this is one reason people struggle to maintain enthusism for their Church experience at our age”.
And then, our Bishop mentioned that he thinks that if you move yourself by getting your own volunteers outside the Church and renting a truck, you should get a pass on having to move others for a while. I also mentioned BKP’s comments that we are not a moving service in WW leadership training.
This was all very refreshing conversation for me. Nice to know my angst resulted in a sought-after policy statement by many leaders in my locale…
