Serene – having served a mission myself, I know that sometimes the missionaries will push you toward a date in part because they frequently change locations, so the time that these specific missionaries will be teaching you is limited. They don’t know when they will be transferred to a new location. The longest I was ever in one area was 3 months. But YOU are not on that time window, so don’t feel too bad about it that they are. There was a woman I taught, and we loved her dearly. Went went to her house several nights a week when she got home from work, and she would cook for us. She had a disabled son, and her husband was not very nice to her (they eventually divorced). She liked the teachings, but she was just not at the right place in that time with her marriage issues and a demanding job; she was under a lot of stress. She was baptized about 8 months later, and I was still just as happy for her even though I couldn’t be there.

My parents are converts (dad was Baptist, Mom was Lutheran) and they took a few years with a few different sets of missionaries. God speaks to your heart in the way you need, not in a prescribed manner for everyone.

On the baptism question, Mormons don’t accept transfer baptisms because of our belief in priesthood authority. While other sects may practice baptism in the correct manner (meaning by immersion, etc.), we don’t believe they have the same authority because we place the great apostasy before the rise of Catholicism, meaning that Catholicism and Protestant sects lost the authority that the twelve apostles had, and it needed to be restored. In any case, that’s the reason. It has become common in the last few decades for various protestant sects to accept transfer baptisms, although this wasn’t always the case.
