GuestFrom several sources I learned that their was a training in our area with only Stake Presidents and Bishops for 11 or 17 stakes. 2 apostles, area authority, temple and mission pres spent 2 hours answering questions and 2 hours “training”. Not too much information on what the topics were. Perry and Scott were the apostles. I wondered if this a regular occurence or an answer to some of the current needs we have discussed on Stay LDS. Anyone else heard of these?

GuestMy understanding is that these types of large or regional type of trainings are relatively infrequent and happen when there is a confluence of several general authorties in an area for whatever reason. Maybe there’s a stake boundary realignment, or a new stake, or a major historical / cultural celebration of some sort – or something along those lines. We had one last year with 2 of the 12 and a couple of 70s and we had one about 3 years ago with similar types of GAs in attendance. My bishop reported to me that the training was surprisingly frank and positive. There was some discussion of modestly / chastity and that perhaps our focus isn’t quite right. I was told that a mission president spoke and said the greatest problem facing future future missionaries isn’t masturbation but boys who play video games really well but can’t talk to people. This mission president said he’d rather have a mission full of masturbating missionaries than missionaries who cannot communicate. He wasn’t publicly reprimanded at least.
I would guess that the content and tone of the meetings varies tremendously according to who is presiding.

I’d like to get that line on tape!

I’m guessing a mission full of video gaming masturbators would be the worst-case scenario?

😆 😳 I think it is a quote on common sense.
I promise you, I would love for my teen to take some time away from xbox to do a little masturbation. At least he would get some physical exercise and use his imagination…
And I’m not joking.
Porn and masturbation are not destroying our youth…x box is doing that just fine all on its on.
Where are the prophets? …maybe you missed the boat on this whole raise the bar nonsense?

Saying the exact same thing, ironically. Now, as you like to say, if the members would follow them in that regard . . .

Really? The same thing? Are the youth being asked about their video game habits during TR interviews? Are the youth being asked about how often thyn play video games during their mission interviews? How many young men have had to delay their mission due to excessive video gaming?
Now, replace the words “video game” with masturbation in the above, and answer the questions again.

GuestSheldon, there has been more than one talk in the last few years warning about excessive time spent on online games – and I can’t remember the last time I heard an apostle mention masturbation directly in a talk. Thus, the top leaders are saying the same thing.

As much as I agree with you guys, I
reallydon’t want video game habits to become yet another marker of personal righteousness reminiscent of “R” rated movies. August 20, 2013 at 5:37 pm #272500Anonymous

OK, I get your point, Top leaders are saying it, but it has NOT reached the people that can make a difference, Bishops and SPs. They ask about masturbation, not video games. Until BKP writes about it and gives talks about it, it’s not getting traction. BKP needs to come up with an equivalent “little factory” speech on video games.

Pretty sure that is what he’s got.

I really dislike agendas that point to one problem over another, like the stop texting memes. It takes people’s focus off of everything and puts it into one thing.
There is nothing wrong in particular if someone enjoys one thing over another and focuses their time into it.
Video games aren’t worse then concentrating on sports, someone who goes fishing a lot, or someone trying to master karate or even someone who spends too much time in church. “All things in moderation.”
There seems to be too much interest in shifting from one activity to another. No one should be calling shots to say which activities people should focus on. Let people focus in the things they want and cultivate that into moderation.
Seriously, no one talks when someone spends hours a day practicing in a band or football.
I would really dislike a list of “approved activities and hours” on anything. I would have to openly oppose it.
However a general guide line with moderation in all things is good. But no activity over another.
The SP, GA mission presidents really should lay off pushing one activity over another they personally feel better about.
Let the boys be who they are, don’t try to shape them into something you want them to be.
