Now that you mention it the sources may all be second hand, but there are at least a couple that tell a similar story – and remained faithful to Joseph so I take them as trustworthy. The idea is Joseph explained to his trusted associate that following a socially risky command always had the potential of going wrong — if word got out. The most prominent situation would be with the secret practice of plural marriage. The accounts we have say Joseph told them if word got out he may have to cut them off from the church to protect the practice and protect the church, but later he would restore their blessings and all would be well. Obviously this doesn’t sound fair to the individual who is trying to follow direction, but the idea of reversibility restores justice.
