StayLDS forum now upgraded

I was able to successfully set up a private server and practice the upgrade process. Based on that success, I pushed through the anxiety and updated the live server. The StayLDS forum is now on the most recent version of php/phpbb.

In previous upgrades we saw lots of neat new features, this upgrade is far less glamorous. As you can see, the new version looks exactly like the old. The upgrades all related to fixing rare bugs that no one ever experienced and to make phpbb compliant with the latest versions of the software that it uses.

The server is now running php 8.1 (latest) and phpbb 3.3.8 (latest).

I was able to retain the plugin that asks new registrants for justification text.

I was not able to retain tapatalk. The plugin was incompatible with the latest version of phpbb. If people clamor for it, I can research finding an updated version of tapatalk.

We also lost the wire-frame logo of the D.C. temple that was in the title at the top of the screen (when browsing on a computer). I can look into re-adding that logo, since I originally put it there. Maybe we find something else… I’m not sure about the licensing of that image, I just found it on the internet and photoshopped it.

If we wanted to give the site a facelift to make it feel fresh we could always install a new style (https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styles-2).

The forum is up to date. What’s still very back-level is https://www.staylds.com/. That’s on some ancient version of wordpress that I think Brian modified. For instance, I know he deleted the login page because it removed a vector of attack from hackers. He warned me never to try to update it when he was transitioning the technical stuff over to me, stating that it would simply break.

That wordpress site “is what it is.” If people are looking to freshen things up, the old wordpress site may be the place to do it. I may not be able to update the software but from time to time I have updated the articles and links on that page.

I have zero experience with wordpress management and have no plans on learning it but last I checked, which was a few years ago, there wasn’t much interest in doing anything with the wordpress site. I believe the consensus was that it is more a repository of the most important articles at staylds and a pass-through to the forums.
