GuestIt’s that time again to renew the annual hosting account and pay the site management fee in order to continue. The annual fee is only $131.88 And the renewal deadline is February 6th, 2021.
I will reach out to Mormon Heretic to see if he is still interested in covering that amount.
I had written him a private message about a month ago but I do not know if he has returned to read it.
If that doesn’t work then I will do another post with requests for donations.

GuestI didn’t see the other message, but I got your note today. Yes, I will be happy to cover the costs. Let me know how I need to get the funds to you. December 22, 2020 at 1:19 pm #340779Anonymous

GuestUpdate: I have reached out to MH and successfully received the funds from him.
We are financially solvent for another year and before the holidays even.
Thank you MH and Gospel Tangents for your generous support.

GuestLooks like I am a little late getting the fund drive moving this year. It’s that time again to renew the annual hosting account and pay the site management fee in order to continue.
The annual fee is only $131.88 And the renewal deadline is February 6th, 2022.
This year I have an additional option to support StayLDS financially. In addition to Paypal or mailing me a check, we can also accept Venmo payments.
I will reach out to Mormon Heretic to see if he is still interested in covering the fee as he so generously did last year.
I will also do a public post with requests for donations.

GuestThanks, Roy. January 20, 2022 at 8:25 pm #340786Anonymous
GuestJust to keep everyone informed of the progress. MH is willing to help us out again.
Unfortunately, the fee went up to $177.02 (including a 17% discount that they gave me when I complained about the increase).
I am working with MH to get it paid before the deadline.

GuestThank you Mormonheritic/Gospel Tangents for your generous donation. We are now paid up until February 2023. February 1, 2022 at 9:15 pm #340788Anonymous
GuestI echo the thanks. I also confess that when I saw that date I thought, “Wow, paid up for the next two years.” I’ve lost my ability to keep track of time.

GuestHappy new year! Every new year I think to myself, isn’t it about time to pay for StayLDS hosting? Bad news, the hosting is still tied to the email of Brian Johnston who is now deceased and now they require two factor authentication. I think I can work with them to get back into the account (the customer service line is taking the holiday off today).
But it begs the question if we should continue. It seems that we never recovered our momentum and participation after the covid pandemic and we seem to be dwindling. Is February a good time to let inmotion hosting turn off the lights?
IF I can get back into the account, then I will learn how much money it will take to keep the lights on. I estimate that it would be in the ballpark of $200.
Next I would contact MH to ask if he is interested in supporting us for another year. Mormon Stories Foundation has not financially supported StayLDS in about 5 years. Barring MH making a donation then I think raising $200 with the few remaining active StayLDS participants to be a real hurdle.
StayLDS Administrative and Moderation team, what are your thoughts?

Interesting. That does present a problem. I’m still able to log into the technical side. I suppose if push came to shove we could always attempt to back everything up, let the current account die, and then try to restore everything on a brand new account. I’m not sure how smooth that process would go, probably not very. Hopefully the inmotion people can work with you.

That is a good question. I’ve mentioned this in the forums but I think there are many factors that have contributed towards the fall-off. The need for an anonymous web forum has declined because people have many more outlets for support than they did when this site was first created. Facebook groups, subreddits, youtube channels, other social media resources that I’m too old to even know about, even friends and family. The “great awakening” has touched many in the 15+ years the site has been up. If people can get help from a close friend that they remember having experienced a faith crisis then they’ll probably go to that friend and not need to rely on making connections with anonymous randos on the internet.
I hate to lose the conversations though.

I couldn’t say how many lurkers there are but we were down to maybe a half-dozen regulars that posted. Most of the other regulars do what people do, have their experience, learn, adapt, and move on. Plus it’s hard to maintain a lively place for conversations when there are only a half-dozen people. It doesn’t help that the world of Mormonism is finite. Lots of the same conversations.
First things first I suppose. We need to know whether we can even log back into the account to pay the bill. That alone could dictate things for us.
The sooner we know the better because if we do make this the thing that causes us to close up shop I think we should get that information out there in the public forums so people know what’s going on and to give them time to get contact info from the people.
