I have accepted the calling of being one of several EC instructors in my ward this past year and have felt like when its been my turn I’ve been doing a fairly good job job of teaching from a perspective in-line with how many of the members here tend to have synergy around (including historical truthfulness, compassion for diversity, understanding leadership fallibility and and how that plays with importance of seeking personal revelation) ie. all around a bit progressive in nature which seems very authentic to me. Up until now I’ve always been assigned the subject matter (the ever so original teach from first presidency message of current ensign, topic) This time around i am left wide open because naturally the conference issue has no fp message. I am to instruct from one of any of the conference weekend talks of my choosing. Any ideas for a jumping off point? The only place i keep going in my own mind is staying away from ones i really felt a lack of spirit in…. ie. first several talks of priesthood session so i naturally have eliminated those.. But instead of a process of elimination i thought it better to post here first so as to come from a more positive and pro-active angle of choosing this topic now that i have some mobility. Thanks in advance, this community has helped me and my little family in ways you will never know!

Pretty much anything by Pres. Uchtdorf – ever – is a good idea. :D

This talk has been on my mind a lot lately…I find it a good one for Priesthood to remind how we can love and see others in a christ-like way, not try to change them to be like us.

    People to People

Are there members of your quorum you don’t see who would respond to an invite to help build a nativity scene for the Christmas ward activity?

Are there members of your quorum not attending weekly that would help collect or distribute food for Thanksgiving?

Are all invited and welcome to come be a part of your quorum and the service opportunities, or does your quorum just ask for volunteers on Sunday from those that don’t smell like smoke or don’t have any doctrinal doubts or haven’t been divorced?

I would listen to a Priesthood lesson focused around those ideas. Especially around this time of the year.

I attended a ward in Orem, Utah yesterday with one of my sisters and her family. In Gospel Doctrine, the teacher asked about personal experiences where we have felt the love of God and a personal connection to the Savoir.

After a couple of people shared experiences (including a woman who talked about comfort when she was going through a divorce), my sister mentioned that she listens sometimes to a local Christian radio station and is inspired by how many people who are not LDS have had the type of experiences we were discussing in class.

I didn’t get to know this sister very well over the years, since I moved away from home before she was a teenager. Her life is ultra-orthodox from the outside view. Looking at her, the automatic assumption would be that she is a classic, Stage 3 TBM – but that SS comment was pure Stage 5. This is one of my sisters, and I didn’t know her nearly as well as I thought I did.

    Two points:

    1) “Teachable moments” are all around us, if we recognize them and react humbly and maturely.

    2) We aren’t as alone in many of our views as we assume we are.

Thanks, Ray. What you’re saying rings true. Re. the original post, a suggestion is Linda Burton’s “First Observe, Then Serve.” The talk itself isn’t so, so beautifully written, but it’s obviously great counsel and would probably lead to a a good class discussion.
