GuestThis talk (Elder Groh) is addressed to youth and young adults, addressing how to come to know God. April 2, 2017 at 9:11 pm #319762Anonymous
GuestHow many of today’s talks haven’tstarted with an appeal to fear? April 2, 2017 at 9:15 pm #319763Anonymous

I noticed this as well (not just today) and it got me wondering what was going through the minds of the various speakers as Uchtdorf was giving his talk. If I led off with an appeal to fear in a talk in a ward and Uchtdorf went first you’d see me up on the pulpit doing a lot of erasing.

GuestI pointed it out to some family members. They didn’t get it, said he was just stating fact. Many of the speakers have likely internalized the fear into their world view and don’t recognize that they’re doing it. April 2, 2017 at 9:20 pm #319765Anonymous
GuestQuite a few (too many for me) have used fear as part of the talks, but far fewer have been based or focused on fear. Also, what some people see as fear, others see as descriptions of reality. That is an important difference.
I also wonder how many understood the application of Pres. Uchtdorf’ message to theirs. I hope his approach changes things in the future.

GuestI like something Ann said in another thread. Ann wrote:
And I don’t think most leaders understand that – and maybe I’m generalizing from my own experience – the first thing to go in a faith crisis is fear. I’m done with it. (Except for the “fear”/awe of God.) So the more they want to transact with the currency of fear, the less I connect.

But I like that Grow’s at least said the goal is to know God, not to “have a testimony” of the Church.

Good point. It is part of a general rhetoric in the church.April 2, 2017 at 9:23 pm #319769Anonymous
Guestydeve, I just saw your description of your family members’ response. For them, if they truly do not feel fear, it isn’t there in practical terms, even if it is there in theory. I try to keep that in mind as I listen to others with empathy.

GuestFear is the general context of life, and it is fundamentally evolutionary in nature. Those who feared properly were those who survived. In all standard motivation charts, it is the lowest common denominator. It works, because it is deeply natural and often unrecognized – and more often than we like to admit, necessary.

GuestOut of curiosity how do you warn someone they may be doing something wrong without making them feel a little nervous? I guess you could always fall back on “all is well in Zion, yea Zion prospereth”. That way no one would feel bad. April 2, 2017 at 9:29 pm #319772Anonymous
GuestThis talk (Elder Hoyos) is basic and orthodox. Not inspiring to most here, but nothing truly offensive. April 2, 2017 at 9:35 pm #319773Anonymous

The advice in many talks about showing love when correcting is good. The problem comes up when you do it over and over again. I got the message the first time, deemed it bad advice, and now it feels like I’m being disrespected. But the first time or two is fine. -
