GuestElder Cook just hypothesized that the Urim and Thummim might have been training wheels until Joseph didn’t need that sort of help. The way we are talking about things is changing from the most purely literal. I like that.

GuestTongue-in-cheek post. When I went on a mission I was principally concerned with three things:
1) The cost.
2) How hard it was going to be to sacrifice all my friends at the altar.
3) Is my girlfriend going to get married while I’m gone.
Cook’s list was good too.

Out of curiosity how do you warn someone they may be doing something wrong without making them feel a little nervous? I guess you could always fall back on “all is well in Zion, yea Zion prospereth”. That way no one would feel bad.
I think the problem comes when the danger is more imagined than real or when the danger is only a small possibility and can be otherwise easily identified.
A classic example of fear mongering in the church is how some mission presidents and other leaders espouse strict obedience to mission rules lest one get no baptisms; or conversely the promise that such strict obedience will always bring baptisms but in reality doesn’t.
ETA that mission rules are distinct from commandments in this example.

GuestAdversity should not be seen as divine disfavor. (paraphrase) I think we need to hear this weekly at church.

GuestMissionaries are coming over for dinner, and we need to prepare for them. Adieu!

We see it in connection to commandments as well. Attending a Sunday championship tournament is the slippery slope to apostasy. Pay your tithing instead of feeding your family or the windows of heaven will be closed and you’ll be in worse financial straits. Masturbation turns you gay. If you’re queer, don’t pursue a relationship with someone of the same gender, because it’s Satan’s “counterfeit love” and “counterfeit marriage” and you’ll be unhappy both in this life and the life to come. Any evidence or powerful spiritual experiences to the contrary must also come from Satan.

GuestI wish the church would come up with the money – after all the teaching about the sabbath, sacrificing worldly things for it, etc., – to fund a commercial-free conference broadcast. Since I’m editing, forgot to say:
I liked Elder Cook’s reminder that spiritual development requires time and effort.

It is commercial free on BYUTV and the internet (and BYUTV is available online as well). I do agree, it does seem that the church could pay for the airtime on regular commercial TV if they really wanted. FWIW, I have never seen conference with commercials – maybe another blessing of living outside the Corridor in the lone and dreary world.

We do. I was referring specifically to missions, but we do get this kind of fear mongering all the time. As I said earlier, it’s part of the rhetoric. And parrots seem to love it.

GuestI was putting BYU license plates, T-shirts, credit union/mortgage companies, Provo tourism, etc., in the advertising category. Just a blanket wish for no selling of stuff at conference. April 2, 2017 at 11:35 pm #319787Anonymous

Shortly after GC became a household watching deal my friend and I found it ironic how much LDS shopping we could do on the Sabbath. 800 number for everything or go online and book the Bethlehem Tour, order the New President so and so book, EFY. As long as it was bookended by conference shopping was safe.

I actually don’t usually watch on BYUTV, but I do sometimes. Are you talking about ads that come before and after the sessions and whatnot? I’m not sure I really remember them or have noticed them. I think in October I watched some on BUYTV (Roku app). I just don’t remember ads, but I’m pretty good at ignoring ads anyway. We initially got Dish because of BYUTV and being able to watch conference at home (back in the early 2000s). Other than going to the church it was the only way to watch here at that time. We’ve long since cut the cord and I do watch BYUTV sometimes, but I generally watch GC on Youtube (Mormon channel) and Chromecast. Completely ad free.
