I’ve often joked about all the things I include in “getting religion” on Sundays, notably visiting dead communist leaders lying in state, and watching Ancient Aliens reruns.

The concept and principle of a Sabbath is one I love.

Many of the personal interpretations of what is appropriate on the Sabbath? Not so much. However, I don’t complain about or ridicule (usually) how others worship on the Sabbath. I don’t believe there is one true, universal way. Dictates of their own conscience and all that jazz.

I certainly do like the idea of a day of rest and I wholeheartedly think people need such a day. Combining that with worship is also fine by me. Frankly, other churches probably get it more right than we do in that respect with the 1-1 1/2 hour service. Of course, historically (before the three hour block) it wasn’t the way it is now in the church. Honestly to an extent I wouldn’t mind going back to the old system except that I could see a more combined SM and SS and perhaps doing it all in about 1 1/2 hours, and doing PH/RS/YM/YW/Primary on a week night – probably all the same night at the same time. But I digress.

Since another part of my rebuilding of faith has led me to a more deist concept of God, except for personal rejuvenation and worship, does keeping the Sabbath really matter? Does God know if we actually keep it or not? Will we simply be asked at the final judgement “Did you keep the Sabbath Day holy?” similar to TRI fashion?

*Side note: if we had it to do over again there would be no spending the night at all, ever. We used to think people who wouldn’t let their kids spend the night or have kids over were weird. Now we understand.

We also don’t do sleepovers with non-relatives. We feel that this is a “personal guardrail” to avoid compromising situations. We are willing to consider exceptions in extenuating circumstances. And yes, sometimes people do look at us weird.

Yikes, I’ve got a few facebook status updates from some ultra TBMs complaining about other members watching the super bowl. Worshiping at the altar of mammon, saying members elevated the game to the level of the second coming. 😮 😯

I wonder what does more damage to the spirit, watching a football game or passing such harsh judgement? Well I just did both so where does that leave me? :)

Our lessons at church relied heavily on references to the Superbowl teams and outcomes expected. I can’t imagine any of them were judgmental about the prospect of watching it. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone so TBM that they would judge others for watching the Superbowl.

I have. We used to have a member of our stake presidency who had several boys. They prided themselves, and always made public note of it this time of year, that they taped (in those days it was VCRs) the game, slept in the evening while the game was on, and got up at midnight to watch it. The gist of the whole thing was that actually watching it on Sunday was sinful, but by them watching it after midnight they still could talk with all their friends about the game on Monday. I definitely know others who are judgmental of Sunday TV watching, but I do think there are fewer now than in the past.

Interesting. My comment wasn’t hyperbole. In fact I cleaned it up considerably. I guess people do things like that all the time with respect to any difference in opinion; like the game console or cola “wars.” It’s not enough to just like what you like, sometimes people have the tendency to attack what others like because it’s a form of validating the decision they’ve made for themselves.

Also, we used to have our stake priesthood meeting on super bowl Sunday. There was no disguising the fact that it was scheduled on that day every year on purpose. Specifically so priesthood holders couldn’t watch the game on Sunday.

I think that’s what is at the root of it all. An external manifestation to demonstrate righteousness. Wearing a religion on one’s sleeve if you will.

I think God scheduled the Superbowl on Sunday so he could watch it, since he was busy with all his other responsibilities the other six days.

    I might be wrong about that, but . . . :P

If a GA said this it would become doctrine within a matter of months, revelation if the prophet said it. :P
