12 new temples all over the place in the world. Not much else. I wouldn’t call this a blizzard of changes by any means.

I’d say the two hour block, and practically erradicating the term “mormon” from our vocabulary, were pretty big changes.

One of the biggest changes, I felt, was when President Uchtdorf said,

    Quote:

    “Solomon was wrong”

He was specifically speaking on when Solomon said, in the first chapter of Ecclesiastes, that all things done under the sun was vanity. He specifically said a prophet, who wrote what we in the LDS Church have for canonized scripture, was wrong. I think this is a wonderful step in the right direction, in opening up rational discussion. He’s definitely given the best talk, IMHO, this conference, and for more than that.

The church has always had it in for the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon, but a shame to hear this about Ecclesiastes, one of the best books in the OT, perhaps in the Bible. I have often drawn inspiration from it.

Ecclesiastes is pointing out that most, if not all, of our actions on this world will come to nothing and are for our own gratification. Look at social media, vanity of vanities. This world will pass away at some point so it will all go. The work of people in past centuries is largely unknown to us.

Sorry Pres. Uchtdorf, much as I enjoy your talks, I think you’re wrong on this one.

The first is massive, but the second? Time will tell. I’ve never had a problem with the term, and it does seem to rankle that we had a “I’m a Mormon” campaign not so long ago.

My wife thought it was funny there were people trying to come up with a short form name for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. The name someone suggested was the TABCATS. I thought that was great! Almost like tabby cats. And the acronym fits! It sounds like a jazz group but nonetheless it’s a clever name!

I like Ecclesiastes as well, but that’s not what I was happy about. What I REALLY appreciated and was excited about, was how an apostle was able to directly, and openly disagree with another Church authority, rationally explain why, and offer a new perspective. You don’t have to agree with Uchtdorf, just like Uchtdorf doesn’t have to agree with Solomon. Both perspectives are invaluable, and the fact that we can (hopefully) talk about both is super important.

Yes, I just wish he’d picked on some parts of the Old Testament instead – you know the “rob their homes and rape their women” stuff. He’s still the best speaker at GC.
