Snark warning. Taking a name to the temple, now there’s a fresh and innovative plan!

I don’t know how much help the dead truly need from us. I guess making a difference is in the eye of the beholder. We, as a church, really believe that receiving ordinances makes a difference.

In this instance the “thank you” is being callingless. Enjoy it while it lasts.

This somewhat reminds me of current events in my ward. Our ward conference is next month and as part of it the SP asked that the ward perform a service project the day before and invite the stake council to participate. I did not see the letter, but I do know our SP meant community service (because I know him). The chosen “service” project: clean the church building. 🙄 Using my Yoda voice: “Always looking within you are. Always about you it is. Never the community you see.”

I just wish that there was a different motivational strategy besides guilt and duty. I feel like Bishop told me that I wasn’t worthy to hold this calling anymore when he could have just said “Thank you.” DW says that I should look at the bright side. At least I got released right before this next big push and all the planning meetings that will entail. DW is a smart lady.

I too wish the church could get away from using guilt and fear to motivate people.

Indeed, you gave the perfect example (and handled that Jedi mind trick well you strong minded guy):

He testified that we ordained men have a duty and only by enduring to the end can we live with our families forever. I nod smile and thank bishop for the encouragement.

Snark: you did endure to the end – of the interview!

It gets sold that “we are helping them” – and I am now convinced that that is partially an illusion – the real truth is that “we need their help”. We get to know them (at least their names) and histories through the preparation for temple work. We feel that we put them to obligation to us through temple work. Lineage and legacy are powerful connectors.
