I recently read this book and I really enjoyed it. I reminded me a bit of ‘Catcher in the Rye’, which is one of my favorite books. I’ve never been much into reading LDS fiction, so I don’t know if it’s unique, but I loved the fact that I could relate to so much in the book. It seems like most of the LDS books I’ve ever read are very deliberately trying to spin things in a faith-promoting light. Any books I read from apostles or other general authorities just come across as sickly sweet, to me. Maybe it’s my general nature, but when I read some apostle going on and on about how his wife is a perfect angel and can do no wrong and how we should all get down on our knees and worship women, it just makes me want to vomit (Not that I have anything against women, I just use that as an oft seen example). I just don’t want to read about how awesomely righteous someone else is. It’s not inspiring at all to me. I suspect it’s not true, anyway, but even if it is, I just find nothing in it that I can relate to in my own life. Those pious stories are so far above me that I don’t see them as lofty goals and ideals, but just unreachable pipe dreams.

Anyway, sort of got off track there, but I liked ‘The Back Slider’ because it was very different from what I’ve read in the past. I wouldn’t necessarily call it faith promoting, but definitely refreshing and enjoyable.

Has anyone else read this? If so, can you recommend any similar reads? I’m just in the middle of ‘The Accidental Terrorist’ by William Shunn, and I am enjoying it also, despite it’s over-the-top disgruntled ex-Mormon overtones.
