One of the things that I always loved about church discussions when I was growing up was that Mormonism seemed to ask better questions, not that it had better answers, but that the thinking its unique doctrines prompted was smarter and more interesting than what I heard asked elsewhere. I’m sure there’s selection bias involved, but here are a few of the questions that I like within Mormonism, despite the trend in the last 20 years to focus on answers rather than questions (I think we’ve really lost something there).

    – How does personal revelation really work? How do we distinguish between our own will and inspiration?

    – If God is as man once was, who is God to God?

    – Does God control nature or is He subject to natural law?

    – When did God become infallible, or is he not really infallible, but just better than we are?

    – Are multiple mortal probations necessary to achieve godhood?

    – Do we all have to eventually become a savior to be exalted? Is that role required to achieve godhood?

    – Are there other books of scripture out there hidden somewhere?

    – What constitutes scripture? Is inspired literature scripture if it broadens the mind and elevates the spirit?

    – When we say families are eternal, but everyone has to have a spouse, does that mean that eternity is just a whole lot of couples?

    – How many women were in the council of gods who created the earth? Is a council of gods the same as a pantheon?

    – How do all the religions of the world tie together into one great truth?

How about you? What would you add to this list?

All good questions, Hawkgrrrl, I particularly liked this one:

Here are my additions to the list:

-How does prayer really work? Does God Himself have the ability to hear all prayers with His infinite powers and respond through one Holy Spirit to billions of child spirits simultaneously? Or does He use angels and a chain of command to interact with His children?

-Is the Holy Spirit one constant personage, or a position in the Godhead possibly filled by different individuals at different times?

-Are we expected to always have a child-parent relationship to Heavenly Father throughout Eternity, or will we progress to a Adult-Parent relationship more like peers but with respect and generational hierarchy?

-Do we believe in sex in the afterlife? (this is related to your question, HG, on if the afterlife is a bunch of couples)

-Will those who lost their first estate (1/3 of Hosts of Heaven who followed Lucifer), ever throughout Eternity get another chance?

-Did “Other Sheep I have which are not of this fold” include other planets?

What is our relationship to God – and to godliness?

In the Heavens, are parents single?

Why do we know so little about Heavenly Mother – and can we ever know more – and, if so, how will that happen?

How can prophets make mistakes and still be prophets? (That doesn’t get asked enough, but it is a very Mormon question.)

What happens on other worlds – and what is life like there?

How does creation work? What does it mean in the creation of humans to organize matter?

Why do things happen to individuals so differently? (Some are killed, while others find lost car keys.)

What is the one great whole into which all truth can be circumscribed?

So many more, but, just to say it, the unique questions of Mormon theology are perhaps my favorite parts of Mormonism.

    I miss question, too.

    Mine –

    * Which is more important in this life My Personal Mission or LDS callings?

*What is My Personal Mission and how do I determine it?

*Are there different kingdoms or mansions? If mansions are they designed to our tastes, likenesses, etc.

    *Are there seasons in heaven?

    * Will we spend time painting, skiing, baking, sculpting?

*Part 2 of the prior – Can we take classes or develop talents we missed in life?

Last and most important to my heart –

*Will we get time to hang out with people we wanted to i.e. missing family, like minded people, others from generations before us – like Ghandi or Mother Teresa for example.

Ah, yes, that last one triggered a few more I thought of:

    – Do people in the CK get to visit people in the lower kingdoms? Won’t it be painful if loved ones aren’t with us in the CK through their own choices?

    – Will the telestial kingdom be like some kind of prison show or ghetto since all the murderers and adulterers will be there?

    – How much “valiance” do you have to have to go from the terrestrial kingdom to the celestial? What does it mean exactly? Bearing your testimony X amount of times? Being killed for the cause? Being willing to be martyred?

    – Does everyone in the CK look the same, kind of like in the temple? Do they all have white hair? Are there different races? Are there fat people? Are we all the same age? Do people have personality differences or are we just “one will”? Are there differences of opinion?

    – Are there different saviors for different planets?

    – Would God allow space travel and first contact with people from other planets if we could do it scientifically or is there a theological reason to keep us separate?

    – Do resurrected bodies have blood or some other substance that doesn’t decay or get disease?

    – What is wrong with coffee and tea that’s not wrong with other caffeinated or hot beverages? (Some people used to speculate that it was tannin).

    – Should we be able to marry anyone who is “worthy” or is there a more limited number of people we can successfully be married to? Does attraction matter? Do personality differences matter?

    – When the earth is a urim & thummim will it show nudity? People going to the bathroom? Intimacy? How will there be privacy?

Dang Hawkgrrrl – your thoughts are really stuck on the topic of toilets this week! :)

That bothered me a lot when I was a kid, the idea that God could see me in the bathroom. I don’t think I’m alone in that.

Another advantage of Deist belief – even if God could see you in the bathroom, He wouldn’t care to look.

If you believe in a disinterested God, then you would assume he doesn’t give a crap. Did I just say that? Bad pun.

I have a lot of the questions outlined by Hawkgrrrl and Heber13 – but most of my questions boil down to how our bodies will function. The more I think about it the more I believe that our theology is tied to traditional human bodies, sex and procreation, but it doesn’t make sense on many levels. Currently I believe that a literal resurrection is wishful thinking so my first comment to God wouldn’t be a question but would be something like “Wow – you really do exist!” Followed by – “do I have to wear a beard?”

What is the appropriate way to work with volunteers that engenders commitment, yet respects their agency at the same time?

    Where did we come from?

How can God be merciful, yet just as the same time?

If we are willing to serve but not given a calling . Who is held accountable? I don’t think we are accountable. Is there other ways to fill our mission on this earth if we are not given the opportunity to serve in our ward or stake?

Not if you plan to attend BYU 😆
