The traditional one thinks the world’s problems can be solved by smiling and praying and being happy and obedient, but they encounter people who, for example, sing a song entitled (literally), “F*** You, God”.
See, I think I could handle pretty much anything except that song.Exactly! But if it was in a different language then I wouldn’t know! So maybe we would still be okay.

GuestI’m compiled in a book with a poem with the same title. Makes it kind of difficult to try and give the thing to folk. July 27, 2011 at 12:43 am #240628Anonymous
GuestDigging up a thread from the grave here…. The musical is hilarious but DIRTY!! <
The hasa diga eebowai song is horrible (the Africans start singing it English, so you’re not getting out of that one), so is all of the reference to genital mutilation and Joseph Smith curing his AIDS through sexual encounters with frogs. I did laugh at the line about JS getting visited by Moroni when he beamed down from the starship Enterprise and a few others. A lot of the songs are really cheesy and in good humor a la mormon movie style. You just have to watch out for the mouths on those Africans.July 27, 2011 at 1:56 am #240629Anonymous
GuestThere is a really interesting thread over on By Common Consent right now – and Margaret Blair Young’s comment is very insightful. http://bycommonconsent.com/2011/07/25/the-only-true-and-living-review-of-the-book-of-mormon-musical/ July 27, 2011 at 2:23 pm #240630Anonymous
GuestHere is a clip from the movie — the one bad word in this little 3 minute vignette is bleeped out. I have to say, in this song, they really did capture the “All or Nothing” approach I held as a full-time missionary, the “white-knuckle my way to heaven” approach. And they do poke fun at some of our more unusual beliefs by juxtaposing some of our unusual beliefs, accurately represented, against some of the high commitment values we hold. My wife and I found it hilarious, particularly when he fearlessly walks into a camp of Ugandan terrorists and talks about the lifting of the priesthood ban….. Ray, or Brian, if this is too offensive, then I welcome a moderation, but personally, I don’t find it offensive at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA1IMSRN2Xk I havent’ seen any other parts of the Book of Mormon Musical on youtube, so I can’t say it’s all like this, but I have to confess, this one had us laughing. My wife posted it on facebook and got neutral to negative reactions from people in our Ward, so you decide…

GuestNPR had the entire musical on their website a month or two ago. It has since been taken down (likely due to offended people). That song is one of the cleanest along with the Hello one and a few others. (Hello is on youtube as well as are all of the rest) I will admit I laughed…a lot…listening to the whole thing. But it does get really profane. My wife got offended in the Hello song…but she was raised hardcore mormon and can’t handle blasphemy or mockery very well. Hasa Diga Ebowai could get Samuel L Jackson to raise an eyebrow for a spilt second. -
