    Well put.

And if I could add just one more comment about consitency, if I could put my finger on the one thing that bothers me most about the BoM, its overabundant consitency would probably be it. That may sound strange, but it makes sense to me.

To those of you have given input to helping me try to understand about the BoM helping one become nearer to God, Thank you. Some of it makes sense and some of it doesn’t really help me but that’s OK. Now if I can just get past the things that have helped push me away maybe I’ll better understand. Thank you again.

I think the BoM is half-OT and half-NT, it’s an interesting mix of the two.

The next nearest thing is the Apocrypha, but for different reasons.

I might say the BoM is 25% OT, 35% NT, and 40% 1830s teachings…all with intentions we get get closer to God by it all.

I think the OT / NT description is another compelling reason to see the BofM as inspired, at the very least. The clash between culture and theology is subtle and nearly seamless in the books leading up to 3rd Nephi (including Ether, in a truly fascinating way), and it’s really interesting to notice how many examples there are of it throughout the book.

I apologize if that is too cryptic to understand well, but it’s really late, and I need to get to bed.

I am reading a fascinating book that was written in 1774 by an American to an Englishman about the Native Americans. It is non-fiction and his insights. My daughter is reading it for college. It makes me think about the Book of Mormon all the time. Especially parts where he explains that the Native Americans were not from China but from the Isrealites. I will post more when I finish reading it. Anyway – thanks for letting me thread jack.

A truly interesting look at the BoM here. It’s about people’s different cultural perspectives on the book. Many of BYU and the church’s studies on the BoM can read like Pravda, but this is a very different take –
