I was just thinking about my own interests in football and times it’s conflicted with my faith. As a youth, all my games were on Sundays. I missed games because of it, though I did play in some, but I did it with a sense of naughtiness. Then you hear stories about LDS athletes who refuse to play on Sunday and forfeit the championship because it was scheduled on a Sunday. This earns a promising LDS athlete Nephi status at church.

I was growing up when Steve Young won the Super Bowl with the 9ers. We all knew he was Mormon, and my question was, “Why is he allowed to play on Sunday?” I don’t know what the answer is but everyone seemed ok with it, it didn’t seem like he was being judged harshly by most members. So much so that I wondered if he got the OK from leadership because it could somehow advance the Gospel cause. Football doesn’t seem like one of those Sabbath day exception vocations like being a doctor.

I know a lot of members watch football on Sunday, though most would not consider it a legit Sabbath activity. So those who love football but also want to keep the Sabbath Holy have nothing to look forward to except Monday Night Football, unless of course they hold FHE on the designated Monday Night.

When I made that connection I started thinking, conspiracy? Turns out that Monday was declared FHE night in the October conference following the first Monday night football game in September of 1970.

Perhaps the NFL is an evil organization that the Brethren have been trying to protect us from? Is it one of the abominable churches of our day? It can’t be that football is evil because we love BYU football, even though a few bouts of unsportsman like conduct has brought some shame to the church recently. Not to mention the belligerent behavior of the fans, especially when playing U of U. Maybe football is evil after all.

I’m only half kidding by the way.

Oh no. You’ve been drinking the nibbler kool-aid. I’ve said something similar (and jokingly) for years. The church has it in for the NFL.

The rules don’t apply to the special people. ;) Once you’re good and famous you cease to be a sabbath breaker and start being a missionary tool. This is all said tongue-in-cheek BTW.

That’s the only night of the week that they are allowed to play so it seems okay to me. Doctors can doct any day of the week. ;)

I agree that the church has it in for the NFL and some would portray them as the anti-Christ. My son had his patriarchal blessing recently, on a Sunday at the patriarch’s house. The patriarch is a very highly respected and loved member of our stake and is very orthodox. He is someone that my wife and I have known for years. He actually did the blessing in a small office room he has in his basement, and there are some paintings he did hanging on the wall there and in the adjoining room. We commented on them and he said they weren’t really his best work and took us upstairs to see some of the other work he had done. We went into his family room area where there was a big screen HD TV – with football on.

HD TV is from the Devil.

    But I still love it!

If that is the case then the new large 4K resolution (UHD – Ultra High Definition) TVs are a Siren’s song for me. I lust to have one. They tempt me beyond my ability to resist. The only reason I have not purchased one is that I am a bit of a cheapskate (and I have to get my kids through college / missions right now).

I have a hard time watching sports in anything but HD these days.

Outside of PC gaming is anyone currently putting out 4K content? You’ve got time. ;)

I have DirecTV and the BYU channel is not HD. It is OH so noticable. Sometimes when watching something like basketball, you can’t even read the scores. My kids just laugh when I thought I was cool that I had a PORTABLE TV (it was black and white 5″). Their phones can all stream HD to them even when they are out camping.

We get BYUTV on Roku and it is HD. I sometimes use Chromecast for BYUTV as well, which also HD.

Okay Boys – I want to chime in a story here.

About 18 years ago my husband and I were both Presidents, him EQ-me YW. As a ward we temporarily shared a building with 4 wards. It was crowded. One of the hardest parts was ward council, etc. We didn’t have room for all of us in the rooms we had at church. Our home has a full private office so we moved all of those meetings ward council, PEC and whatnot to our home. In our house, especially then, football was a religion. Sat., Sun., Monday it was on.

I panicked the first time Ward Leadership was due over, our Bishop was a by the book dude. I begged my husband to turn it off. Around the appointed hour the leadership mill began to arrive. I was in the kitchen doing my Molly Mormon thing and feeding the youngins, when I realized the Bishop arrived. I waited for his scorn. It never came, quite the opposite, as I’m doling out peanut butter and jelly to my kids there crowded around our TV were the entire ward leadership. White shirts, dark slacks, hands on hips arm chair quarterbacking the game. I about fell over in the peanut butter.

From then on we left the games on. Week after week when the meetings were in session, everyone congregated around the football alter, blessing and praising their teams as they went.
