GuestIt’s definitely for safety reasons. Some of the missionaries in my mission did swim. We were in the Canary Islands. The Spaniards especially ignored that rule. My mom used to believe it because of the D&C scripture, but I pointed out how hard it is to draw the line. Does Satan rule the garden hose? Same water. I am pretty sure Satan rules the water I used to brush my teeth in Bali. I was sick as a dog. December 4, 2012 at 1:32 pm #262097Anonymous

GuestWhen you have fear about anything, it is easy to develop a superstition. If you can’t swim, it is natural to develop a fear about water.
If you have a fear about being in water, you develop a superstition.
If you decide you are going to follow the teaching of the Prophet without applying your own interpretation or judgement,
you are going to believe & follow superstition.
Open water can be very dangerous (deadly).
If you learn to swim, develop increased skills, apply judgement & swim with others, it is a very pleasant experience.
Some of my most pleasant memories have been swimming, snorkeling & suba diving with my friends & family.
This is a good example of a teaching (superstition) that I won’t following. I will always apply my personal judgement.

GuestAs someone who has nearly drowned at least once, capsized eight times in the same canoe trip and who can just about swim a single length of the pool… I agree with this rule… -
