I saw that this morning. I like it, and to me it comes from a credible source. My SP has told us the same thing in pretty much the same words, adding that the Q15 were keenly interested in and intimately involved with the essays. He said this in a leadership meeting, though, not in stake conference or anything like that. So, despite Br. Snow being very credible, I still think the essays would be much more widely accepted if any one of the GAs, especially one of the Q15, and even more especially one of the FP (are you listening DFU?) would just say something positive about them in GC.

I agree. This not publicly stating things is getting to be problematic in many areas, I know we work by common consent, but when we do have one like this one – than please over the pulpit or in the Engisn – Make it big. Make it known.

I have mixed feelings because I think the polygamy ones were a mess.

But, of course, we’ve got to start dealing with these subjects.

I think a few of them could use some do-overs. I think polygamy got hamstrung for multiple reasons, a) It’s got 132 all wrapped around it. b) Do you disavow the people who are the children of polygamist lines?

Even with all the messiness I would like to begin the conversations. And not continue the anti-Mormon literature hobby that prevails many conversations in regards to people who leave the church.

And I was kind of hoping that their ambiguous source would make them more fluid – easier to alter. I’m not sure which bodes better for that, “authorizing” them, or not.

I wasn’t thinking that way, good point. If this had been a curriculum department thing and only one GA really knew about it would there be room to clean them up. That might. The really weird part is that nothing is really happening either way. It’s like the group agreed when Marlin K. Jensen was head of the history department to take this on. Now Marlin is gone, they finished some stuff – checked box and moved on. Which doesn’t help anything – especially looking at how the new manuals for CES are being presented.

General Membership of the church isn’t aware of them and if they do learn about them, don’t care. My wife’s reaction was typical — “it’s not my place to question the truthfulness of the gospel” or something like that.

I liked this quote from the historian:

    Quote:

There’s no reason not to use them. The Gospel Topics essays are meant to be helpful, Snow says in the video. “As the information is upon us … we feel we owe it to the rising generation to provide good reliable information.”

I wish they felt that way when I was the rising generation.

these are going to be dealt with one way or the other. Some members are already “dealing with it” by leaving the church. The longer it is not really dealt with, the more dramatic the shock will be for those that find out the details – including things like the strong-arm tactics used. I find those just about as bad as polygamy.

They haven’t moved on. The stuff they are tackling now takes more time.

The issue with writing curricula is that they have to write things that will get enough support to be published – the same as any curriculum. It is a pruning process – and they actually pruned quite a bit in the first wave. That is easy to overlook, but it is true.

This little snapshot isn’t very confidence-inspiring. Peggy Stack is the person who’s finally going to get the essays out there…?

Or maybe there’s nothing wrong with that.

Yep. I feel like telling the brethren, “OWN IT!” They seem to be showing a lack of confidence that the members can handle this.
