    Update:

Well out of the honeymoon period in my self-selected non-profit calling. Thought I would give an update.

Still experiencing many of the same problems I experienced in the LDS Church with people not following through on assignments. However, I found there is a LOT of positive follow-through from certain members of the committee I lead. But overall, the commitment level is higher, and the results achieved far more impactful in the short-term. We are working on the long-term, but that is harder, involving strategic planning and data collection, unlike what we needed in the LDS church.

In order to keep the projects on track, I have recruited project management students who act as “project support specialists” to develop simple schedules of when things have to be completed, remind people about assignment before they are due, and measure performance in terms of results. We are also implementing a measurement mechanism that helps hold people accountable for the things they agree to — in hopefully a non-threatening way.

Thought I would give an update and indicate that the non-profit sector sure is providing me with lots of growing experiences that fill the void my exodus from church service had left unfilled…..
