GuestI had a discussion with my in-laws a bit ago, and then another discussion with a few others in my ward in a very open and amicable way, but the topic was the Church being perfect. In that line of talking, it was told to me several times, there is no difference between the Church and the Gospel, the restored Church is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Because of those reactions, I think it is useful to teach a lesson to the ward in a positive way what the difference is between these, as was done in conference. The members need to go to Church on Sunday and be taught truth, so they can understand things better. Sometimes they don’t think about things, they just believe them, but a good Sunday School less or RS/Priesthood lesson can help clarify and deepen their beliefs, and help them strengthen their testimonies.
It might even help someone avoid Cognitive Dissonance when they learn from outside sources the difference, but I suspect that is really a minor issue in why you’d want to teach the lesson topic. The main point is, teach a lesson where truth is taught. And there is a difference between the church and the gospel, so make sure everyone has a chance to voice their opinions about why that is significant, or why it isn’t.
I think its an important point to make in an uplifting way. Because truth is, they are different things. And faith grows as we increase our knowledge of truth.
