GuestI hope I am not out of bounds in posting this. I realize this is a place for reviewing books, but it does use the term “media” which implies it could be broader than books alone. Further, what I’m about to write is about journals, which I consider books. What I am writing about also involves software, which is a form of media. Further, journal writing is part of LDS Culture and consistent with our principles of thinking about ancestors and posterity. Plus, writing in a journal can help people define their spiritual path — a goal of this site, I believe. If I’m out of scope then I understand if this review has to be removed.
The Journal 8 is journal-keeping software written by a man who goes by DavidRM. He sounds like he’s LDS. I have no ties to him personally other than I bought his software.
I don’t know about you, but if I just use MS Word to write out my journal in software, the journal gets lost over time. It’s hard to keep it organized etcetera.
What I like about the Journal 8 is that it allows me to have a window with the topics on the left, and then all the writings on the right. I can sort and search entries by content or tags I put into each entry, and you can have journal categories where you write on certain topics. You can also have different volumes of journals. I keep both a public journal (autobiography is a less creepy name) and then a private journal which is just for me, and which I will probably delete if I have advance warning of death. Short cut keys allow you to do things like insert the date and time into the journal, and you can create tables, bring in images etcetera. You can reorder entries in a tree, and continue building on the same journal topic a lot like a threaded discussion here on StayLDS. The only difference is that you are the only participant, updating the topic as things evolve within it. There seem to be a lot of other features I haven’t experienced yet. Features like templates that ask you question, a Ben Franklin method for improving yourself, and others.
I purchased the Journal 6 (6 being the version number) many, many years ago and then fell out of journal writing for a couple years. When I reinstalled the Journal 6 on my Windows 10 machine, I found it didn’t work properly on my operating system (Windows 10). So I purchased the newest version, The Journal 8, and it worked very well.
If you’re looking for a good way to keep track of your thoughts, write out your thoughts for self-improvement, or overcoming trauma, then I recommend it highly. This is the third journal-writing software I have used since I decided to go electronic about 10 years ago. And it’s the best one and not that expensive.
