It’s interesting, that MANY of our most famous SF authors and story lines, ARE based on religious themes in the future where technology has progressed to the point where spirituality and religion can be more fully explained.

Star Trek had almost 0 reference to an all powerful force or God. It was all science. When there was a reference to God it was on some back world planet that was still not developed. Yet mostly everything worked even with those Romulans messing things up

and Star Trek was one of the stupidest science fiction projects ever to flourish and gain a following, the wonderful Spock notwithstanding. :P

No talking smack on Star Trek. It is the only true religion. 😆

Yes, Spocks’ motto “Live long and prosper in the land” is a direct book of mormon reference. And did you know they are descendents of Nephites who mixed with elves? No kidding. Star Trek is very Mormon. That’s why it says “To boldly go where no man has gone before”. That’s because space exploration is a priesthood responsibility….:)

Cadence, good point about Star Trek not having much religious themes, except the “underdeveloped” planets.

btw – I am huge Star Trek fan. DS9 is my favorite.

For me it was The Next Generation. The diplomacy of Jean Luc Picard was admirable. The episode “the child” was also phenomenal.

I don’t know, science is too cold and literalist, and there seems to be a strain in it just now which mirrors religious intolerance…

You are all depressing me with the notion that mankind will forever rely on mythology to help them through their lives.

I think we forget that we NEED mythology, particularly as children. We need ideals to guide us, even if they are not extant in reality. Perfect heroes, virtuous lives etc, an ideal to aspire to.

I love mythology, always have done. It talks about things on an emotional level science just doesn’t get.

I disagree, there’s quite a lot about it in ST. In one film they visit God (not really God apparently), in another (the Undiscovered Country) there are hints of it, and a lot of the Vulcan stuff seems connected with it.

Isn’t Q the kind of being that all LDS aspire to?

    I’ll put my anorak away!!!
