I thought I had a very profound comment in Elder’s Quorum about this whole subject. I stated it in this manner: The Book of Mormon is very black and white. According to Moroni it was written for our day. In our day, the world is very grey and increasing in greyness. I stated that in my life I have had to live a lot in the grey. However, I feel that the Book of Mormon may help us to try to live in the black and white in a grey world, although it is extremely difficult. As a child it is easier to think in terms of black and white. As an adult however, I do like being able to navigate my way through a grey world (I feel like I actually have more agency that way to do things of my free will and choice with more options). I just know holding to the iron rod and staying as close as possible is better than drifting off to diverse paths and being lost. I have had diversions in life because of the grey world in which we live. I have chosen diverse paths at times, here is when the dichotomies have helped me make the correct distinction between good and evil. I think because of the true dichotomies in LDS culture we think it gives us license to make the false one’s that lead to prejudice and passing judgment on others.
