I see gross literalism both amongst the fundamentalists and the militant atheists… if they act like this on religious matters, I wonder how they approach music, painting or even the novel. It is something I see spreading in our culture.

I hate to use the left brain/right brain analogy – it is inaccurate in terms of neurologu, but it has some sense of the two sides of human intelligence. There is the logical side of our culture, which is of great use to us. Unfortunately, focusing exclusively on that will make us unhappy and unsatisfied, since we are essentially an emotional species. I see that happening on a huge scale – much of western population is doped up to avoid confronting it. On the other side, we have the dreams, the arts etc – if we focus exclusively on those, we will not meet our material needs.

I think we are also a spiritual species.

I agree with you that happiness and fulfillment, from what I gather you are saying, can be reached through the different areas like religion and art and literature. Social sciences.

I also think we go through cycles. We get less spiritual…and then…reformations happen to bring things back that people miss.

Feeling the spirit can become something very different in our future society than how the 1800s pioneers framed it.
