The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance
by Elna Baker
I felt like a voyeur reading this book. Elna doesn’t pull many punches in her (premature?) memoir. Her language is often crude, the details are often crude, and attitude is fairly irreverent. What a fun read! She even apologizes in the intro to her mother.
It’s a fast read, and an engrossing one, too. She lays out her religious views in a bold way, and leaves us in the end hoping she pulls through… but… I gave this book to my daughter, since she’s in a similar field and is moving soon to (San Fransisco? Boston? We don’t know for sure yet.) She was scared by the book. She sees herself in it, and it really scared her. Did it work to her good, her benefit? I don’t know, yet. We’ll have to see.
Good book. Not doctrinal or anything, but what a ride!
